Chapter 5 - The Balcony Breach

The cold night air whipped against Clara’s tear-stained face as she sprinted across the stone terrace, the heavy layers of her wedding gown wrapping awkwardly around her ankles. Behind her, the sharp sound of heels clicking rapidly on the patio stones signaled that Evelyn and Owen were gaining ground.
"Clara, stop this childish behavior right now!" Owen’s voice boomed across the balcony, carrying a desperate edge of panic beneath its commanding tone. "You’re making a complete spectacle of yourself! What will the guests downstairs think when they see the bride running around the exterior ledges?"
Clara didn't look back. She threw her weight against the glass door of the adjacent guest suite, praying that Marcus was a heavy sleeper who forgot to lock his balcony access. To her immense relief, the handle gave way under her frantic push, swinging open with a loud creak that echoed off the stone walls. She stumbled into the dimly lit bedroom, gasping for breath as she slammed the heavy wooden door shut behind her and threw the interior security bolt into place just as Owen slammed his fists against the exterior glass.
"Open this door, Clara!" Owen shouted, his voice muffled by the double-paned glass. "You cannot run away from this! The documents are already filed with the estate manager!"
Clara leaned her back against the locked door, sliding down until she hit the carpeted floor, her chest heaving as she tried to calm her racing pulse. The room was empty; Marcus must have gone down to the grand ballroom to check on the catering arrangements. Looking around the unfamiliar suite, Clara spotted a heavy oak dresser standing against the interior wall. Without a second thought, she scrambled to her feet and began pushing the bulky piece of furniture across the room, positioning it squarely against the balcony door to barricade her pursuers.
Just as she jammed the dresser into place, the glass pane on the balcony door rattled violently under a heavy blow. Owen was trying to smash his way inside. Clara backed away slowly, her eyes darting around the room for another exit. There was a single interior door leading out into the main hotel corridor, but stepping out into the open hallway meant risking a direct encounter with wedding guests or, worse, hotel security staff who had likely been bribed by Evelyn’s extensive corporate network.
She pulled her smartphone out of the folds of her dress. The screen illuminated her face in the dark room, showing that the call with her father was still active.
"Dad?" she whispered frantically, her voice trembling.
"Clara! Thank God," her father’s voice answered instantly, tight with worry. "I’m in the elevator with Marcus and two officers from the downtown precinct. We’re coming up to the third floor right now."
"Don't take the main elevator, Dad," Clara warned, her eyes fixed on the vibrating balcony door. "Evelyn has security guards stationed at both ends of the third-floor corridor. You need to take the service stairs behind the kitchen."
"We’re almost there, sweetheart. Hold on."

Before Clara could reply, a loud crash echoed from the balcony. Owen had broken through the exterior glass panel, shattering the pane and reaching inside to slide the security bolt open.
