Chapter 8 - The Green Laser

The sharp, intense emerald beam of the tactical laser pierced the dim evening air, landing squarely against the center of Evelyn’s burgundy dress. The older woman gasped, freezing instantly in her tracks as she looked down at the bright green dot glowing against her chest. She whipped her head up, her eyes wide with sudden panic as she stared directly at Clara, who stood rigidly in the doorway with her arm extended in a steady, unwavering line.

"Drop the deed, Evelyn," Clara’s voice rang out, cold, steady, and devoid of any fear. "That laser isn't a toy. It’s calibrated to a high-precision kinetic launcher mounted on the courtyard security drone hovering directly above your head right now."

Owen instinctively threw his hands up to shield his mother, looking frantically up toward the dark autumn sky. True to Clara’s words, a small, matte-black surveillance drone hovered silently just twenty feet above the balcony, its twin rotor blades spinning with a low, ominous hum, its high-definition camera lens locked directly onto Evelyn’s face.

"You’re bluffing," Evelyn stammered, though her fingers noticeably loosened their grip on the heavy parchment deed. "You wouldn't risk destroying the master title just to stop us."

"Try me," Clara replied, her finger resting lightly on the remote trigger. "My father’s legal team can reconstruct a title from public registry records in forty-eight hours, but you and Owen will be spending the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for grand larceny, wire fraud, and extortion. Your choice: drop the paper, or get recorded live by federal cyber-crime units while you destroy evidence."

Marcus grinned, pulling out his phone and tapping the screen twice. "Streaming live to the district attorney’s office right now, Auntie. Smile for the jury."

The psychological pressure cracked Evelyn’s fragile composure. With a frustrated shriek, she dropped the master deed onto the stone patio tiles. Owen lunged to grab it, but one of the uniformed police officers moved with lightning speed, tackling Owen to the ground and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.

"You're making a massive mistake!" Owen yelled, his face pressed against the cold stone as the officer hauled him to his feet. "This is a civil matter! You can't arrest us without a magistrate's warrant!"

"Attempted destruction of federal trust documents and extortion give us immediate probable cause," the second officer stated calmly, stepping forward to secure Evelyn in a second pair of cuffs. "You both have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the officers escorted the handcuffed mother and son back through the guest suite toward the interior hallway, Arthur let out a long, shuddering breath, pulling Clara into a tight, emotional embrace.

"Are you alright, sweetheart?" her father asked, his voice cracking slightly as he kissed the top of her head.

"I am now, Dad," Clara whispered, stepping back to look down at the master deed resting safely on the patio floor. She bent down, picked up the heavy parchment, and slipped it securely into her beaded handbag.

The immediate physical threat was neutralized, but as Clara walked back into the bridal suite to retrieve her remaining belongings, her phone buzzed violently in her palm with an urgent text message from an unknown number.
