Chapter 12 - The Highway Chase

The powerful engine of the luxury SUV roared as Clara pushed the vehicle past eighty miles per hour, closing the distance rapidly on Julian’s black sedan as they merged onto the dark, winding coastal highway. The autumn wind buffeted the chassis of the car, but Clara kept her eyes locked entirely on the tail-lights flashing ahead in the distance. In the passenger seat, Marcus was frantically tapping away at his laptop, trying to establish a remote bridge into the corporate network before the encryption sequence finalized.

"How much time do we have left?!" Clara shouted over the roar of the rushing wind and engine noise.

"Two minutes and ten seconds!" Marcus yelled back, the glow of the laptop screen illuminating his tense, focused face. "Julian has routed the encryption through a rolling proxy network in Zurich. I can't break the firewall directly, but I can inject a payload into his car’s telemetry system if we get close enough!"

"Hold on!" Arthur warned from the back seat, bracing himself against the door handle as Clara took a sharp, hairpin curve along the cliffside road without braking.

Ahead of them, Julian’s sedan brake lights flared brightly as he navigated the winding descent. He clearly realized he was being pursued and was trying to force Clara into an accident by cutting off her line of sight around the blind turns. The cliffs dropped off sharply on the right side into the churning black waters of the ocean below, leaving zero margin for error.

Clara’s mind was razor-sharp, fueled by pure adrenaline and the desperate need to protect everything her family had built. She flicked her high beams on, blinding Julian’s rear-view mirror with a wall of intense white light.

"Now, Marcus! Do it now!" Clara yelled.

Marcus hit the enter key on his laptop with a sharp slap of his palm. A second later, the taillights of Julian’s sedan flickered erratically. The vehicle’s anti-lock braking system engaged autonomously, locking up the rear tires and sending the black sedan into a violent, sideways skid across both lanes of the highway.

Julian fought desperately to regain control, but the telemetry override Marcus had injected completely disabled manual steering input for five vital seconds. The sedan drifted toward the edge of the road, smashing through the rusted metal guardrail with a deafening screech of tearing steel and scattering sparks into the night air.

The car hung precariously over the edge of the cliff, its front tires spinning wildly in empty space above the crashing waves hundreds of feet below.

Clara slammed on her brakes, bringing the SUV to a controlled stop twenty feet behind the wrecked sedan. She unbuckled her seatbelt instantly and threw the door open, stepping out onto the cold asphalt with her phone in her hand.
