Chapter 9

As the encrypted call connected, a sharp metallic click echoed from the far end of the basement corridor. Julian and Clara both froze, turning their flashlights toward the sound. The beam of light cut through the swirling dust motes, illuminating the empty corridor where a heavy fire door slowly swung shut on its rusted hinges. Someone had been watching them from the darkness.

"Stay behind me," Julian commanded in a low whisper, hanging up the satellite phone and sliding it into his trouser pocket while his hand dropped naturally to his side.

They moved cautiously down the corridor toward the heavy fire door. When Julian pushed it open, it led into the older section of the basement—a subterranean cellar where the estate’s original wine racks and storage crates sat undisturbed for decades. The air here was noticeably colder, smelling of damp earth and aging oak.

"Elena?" Julian called out, his voice cutting through the stillness.

There was no verbal response, only the faint, unmistakable sound of high heels clicking against the concrete floor further ahead, moving away with deliberate speed. Julian broke into a run, his footsteps pounding against the floor as he rounded the corner into the central utility hub. But the room was entirely empty. The only exit led back upstairs toward the grand foyer.

When they emerged from the basement stairwell, the atmosphere in the main house had shifted. The dim afternoon light filtering through the stained glass windows of the foyer cast long, blood-red shadows across the black and white checkered floor. The American flag stood motionless in the corner. The house was dead silent, save for the ticking of the grandfather clock.

Clara clutched the metal flashlight tightly, her knuckles white. "She’s planning something, Mr. Vance. People like Mrs. Vance don't just surrender when they're cornered. They lash out."

Julian nodded slowly, his mind racing to calculate his wife’s next move. He had secured the East Wing, but Leo’s nursery, their master bedroom, and all the critical financial records were located in the main house. If Elena intended to burn her world down before letting him take control, she had the means, the motive, and the isolation to do it.
