Chapter 2

The cold marble of the checkered floor pressed hard against Clara’s knees, but she no longer felt the physical discomfort. Her mind was entirely consumed by the fierce protection she felt for little Leo. Julian remained kneeling, his muscular frame tense inside the tailored blue suit, shielding the bundle in the white blanket with his own body as if expecting a sudden strike. The American flag standing in the corner of the grand foyer rustled faintly from a draft, a strange symbol of institutional order in a home descending rapidly into chaos.

Julian looked down at the white blanket, gently peeling back a corner to check on his son. Leo’s skin was warm, his breathing steady, untouched by the emotional tempest swirling around him. Yet, the seed of doubt had been planted deep within Julian’s mind weeks ago, fertilized by strange bruises he had previously dismissed as clumsiness and quiet whispers from the estate staff that he had foolishly ignored in favor of his demanding corporate career.

"Get up, Clara," Julian said softly, his voice devoid of its earlier thunder, which somehow made it much more frightening.

Clara scrambled to her feet, her burgundy service uniform with white trim slightly stained from the dust of the floor. She kept her head bowed out of respect, though her eyes remained fixed on Julian, silently pleading with him to look past the wealth and status that insulated his wife from accountability.

Elena adjusted the fabric of her beige dress, regaining a fraction of her composure. She walked toward a small console table near the double doors, picking up a silver letter opener with trembling fingers to occupy herself. "You are entertaining the delusions of a disgruntled employee, Julian. Look at her. She has always been unstable, prone to wild fabrications whenever her workload increases. If you fire her now, we avoid a public scene."

"Silence, Elena," Julian commanded without turning around. He stood up slowly, cradling Leo against his burgundy shirt. The gold watch caught the light again. "Nobody is leaving this house until the truth comes to light. Not you, not Clara, and certainly not me."

Julian walked past his wife, his shoulder brushing hers with deliberate coldness. He carried his son toward the private study down the hall, leaving the two women alone in the foyer. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him, sealing away the master of the house and leaving a vacuum of tension that seemed to suffocate the very air. Clara stared at Elena, realizing the real war had only just begun.
