Chapter 11

The grand library was a cavernous space filled with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves containing thousands of leather-bound volumes. The afternoon sun cut through the tall arched windows, casting golden shafts of light across the dust motes in the air. Standing near the far wall, her elegant beige dress rustling softly against the Persian rug, was Elena.
She held a heavy metal lockbox in her hands, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders as she hastily shoved a stack of passports and velvet-lined jewelry pouches inside. The sliding wall panel stood wide open, revealing the dark cavity of the hidden wall safe behind it.
"Put the box down, Elena," Julian’s voice boomed through the quiet library, halting her movements instantly.
Elena froze. For a moment, she didn't turn around. Her shoulders rose and fell with a sharp, ragged breath. Then, slowly, she turned to face them. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure fury and desperation, the polished socialite veneer completely shattered. In her right hand, she didn't hold a document or a key; she held a small, sleek black revolver she had pulled from the safe's inner compartment.
"Don't take another step, Julian," Elena warned, her voice trembling slightly, though the barrel of the gun remained pointed steadily at his chest. "I have lost everything else. Do not test me."
Clara gasped, instinctively stepping back behind Julian’s broad shoulder. Julian, however, didn't flinch. He kept his eyes locked on his wife’s trembling fingers, assessing the distance between them.

"You haven't lost anything yet, Elena," Julian said calmly, taking a slow step forward. "You are choosing this. Put the weapon down before you cross a line you can never come back from."
"I crossed that line months ago!" Elena screamed, the suppressed hysteria finally breaking through her control. "You built this empire while ignoring me! You treated me like an ornament! And when I couldn't take the isolation anymore, when the crying wouldn't stop, you expected me to be a saint! I am done playing your game!"
