Chapter 8

The basement of the Vance estate was a labyrinth of concrete walls, exposed pipes, and dim fluorescent lights that hummed a low, irritating tune. Julian moved through the shadows with silent purpose, his loafers making hollow echoes against the concrete floor. Clara had insisted on accompanying him, holding a heavy metal flashlight she had retrieved from the kitchen utility drawer. Every shadow seemed to stretch and twist, casting an eerie atmosphere over the subterranean level of the house.
"Over here," Julian muttered, pointing toward a reinforced metal door marked Electrical and Network Control.
Julian stepped up to the keypad mounted beside the door. He punched in his personal six-digit security code, but the small screen flashed a harsh red light accompanied by a sharp error beep. Access Denied: Override Active. He cursed under his breath, stepping back to examine the housing. Someone had physically swapped the main circuit board with an auxiliary manual relay, locking out the master administrator credentials entirely.
"She’s cutting off our communication with the outside world," Clara said, her voice echoing slightly in the damp air. "If we are trapped here without phone service or internet, nobody will know what’s happening."
"Not necessarily," Julian said, his eyes scanning the exposed conduit running along the ceiling. "The security system is backed up by an independent satellite uplink located on the roof. The basement override only cuts local Wi-Fi and cellular repeaters within the perimeter. It doesn't affect landlines or emergency transponders."
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out an old-fashioned encrypted satellite communicator—a secure device he used for sensitive corporate acquisitions when traveling through remote regions. He powered it on, watching the blue light blink as it established a connection through the thick concrete walls.

"Who are you calling?" Clara asked anxiously.
"My legal counsel and private security detail," Julian said firmly as the call connected on the second ring. "Tell them to dispatch a unit to the estate immediately for a welfare check and property preservation order. Elena’s game is over."
