Chapter 6

The silence in the study grew so dense that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like falling hammers. Elena stared up at her husband, realizing that the man she had manipulated for years had finally vanished, replaced by a stranger driven by paternal instinct and cold logic. She took a half-step back, her high heels clicking sharply against the Persian rug, her hands smoothing the front of her beige dress in a nervous, repetitive motion.

"You are going to ruin us," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous hiss. "If you file for divorce, if you make a public spectacle of this, do you have any idea what my family will do? We will bury you, Julian. Your company, your reputation, your investments—we will strip you of everything until you are begging on the street."

Julian felt a cold smirk touch the corner of his lips, though his eyes remained dead and devoid of warmth. "Is that a threat, Elena? Because last time I checked, threatening a federal witness or a court proceeding carries heavy penalties. And make no mistake, this is going to court. Clara’s journal is already being scanned and uploaded to a secure server off-site. Even if something happens to this house, the truth is out of your reach."

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. For the first time, genuine panic flickered in her dark eyes. She had underestimated him completely, blinded by her own arrogance and the belief that her wealth and social standing were impenetrable armor.

"Julian, please," Elena changed her tone instantly, softening her voice into a pathetic, trembling plea as she reached out to touch the lapel of his blue suit. "Let’s not do something we will both regret. We can fix this. We can go to counseling, take a vacation, leave this place behind. Think of Leo. He needs his mother."

Julian gently but firmly pushed her hand away, stepping back as if her touch were toxic. "He needs a protector, Elena. And right now, that is the one thing you cannot provide."

Clara watched from the corner, holding her breath, witnessing the empire of lies crumble piece by piece.

"Clara," Julian said without turning around. "Pack your things and take Leo to the guest suite in the East Wing. Lock the doors from the inside and do not open them for anyone except me."
