Chapter 4

Clara nodded once, slipping out of the study as silently as she had entered. Julian sank into his leather desk chair, resting his chin on his intertwined fingers while Leo slept peacefully in a cushioned bassinet nearby. The implications of Clara’s words weighed heavily on his shoulders. If the maid’s accusations were true, he had brought a monster into his home under the guise of marriage. He thought about the endless charity galas Elena hosted, the glowing profiles in society magazines, and the polished veneer of domestic bliss they projected to the world. It was all a meticulously constructed facade designed to hide a rotting core.
Minutes later, the door clicked open again. Clara returned, holding a small, black leather-bound notebook tucked inside her apron pocket. She approached the desk and laid it gently on the polished wood. Julian looked down at the book as if it were radioactive. He slowly opened the cover, revealing Clara’s neat, hurried handwriting detailing dates, times, and disturbing incidents that spanned over five months. Each entry was a hammer blow to the life Julian had taken for granted.
"Why didn't you go to the police?" Julian asked, his voice strained as he flipped through the pages documenting erratic behavior, cruel remarks, and deliberate neglect.
"Who would believe me, Mr. Vance?" Clara asked softly, looking down at her polished shoes. "She is a Vance. Her family has judges and politicians in their back pocket. I am just a seasonal maid from out of state with a temporary contract. If I had gone to the authorities without proof, she would have had me arrested for trespassing or theft within the hour. The journal was my only insurance policy."

Julian closed the book slowly. He looked up at Clara, seeing past the uniform and the bandage to the resilient soul beneath. "You were braver than I was, Clara. I was too blind to see what was happening right under my roof."
Before Clara could reply, the sharp, distinct click of high heels echoed in the hallway outside the study. The handle of the heavy oak door began to turn, signaling Elena’s approach. Julian’s eyes locked onto the door, his expression hardening into cold resolve.
