Chapter 12

The barrel of the revolver shook slightly in Elena’s hand, tracking Julian as he took another measured step forward. The library was suffocatingly quiet, the thousands of books lining the walls absorbing any sound except the ragged breathing of the three people trapped in the room. Julian’s mind raced through a dozen calculations, weighing the risk of a physical disarm against the danger of the loaded weapon.

"This isn't about my absences, Elena," Julian said, his tone steady, measured, and devoid of judgment—a technique used to de-escalate crisis situations. "This is about control. When you couldn't control Leo’s crying, you punished him. When you couldn't control my attention, you tried to manipulate the household. And now that you can't control the outcome, you pull a gun."

"Shut up!" Elena shrieked, a tear finally carving a clean path through her meticulously applied makeup. "You think you know everything, don't you? You sit in your boardroom judging everyone from your high horse! You have no idea what it’s like to feel invisible in your own home!"

"Then let us divorce," Julian replied softly. "Take your settlement, take your independence, and leave us in peace. But Leo stays here where he is safe."

Elena let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh. "No. Leo is my leverage. Without him, I am nobody. With him, I always have a claim on you, on this house, on everything you built."

Clara watched from behind Julian, her eyes darting toward a heavy brass bookend resting on the corner of a nearby reading table. She silently calculated the distance, knowing that waiting for Julian to talk her down might give Elena the opening she needed to pull the trigger.

"Mrs. Vance," Clara spoke up, her voice surprisingly steady. "Look at what you’re holding. That’s not power. That’s a prison cell."

Elena snapped her gaze toward Clara, a murderous glint flashing in her dark eyes. "You! This is all your fault! If you had kept your mouth shut, none of this would have happened!"
