Chapter 9: The Freight Car Escape

Bullets slammed into the wooden doorframe of the freight office as the operatives blindly returned fire through the dust cloud, splintering ancient timber and showering the room with wood chips. Julian shoved Leo out the rear exit first, followed closely by Elena, as they hit the gravel embankment outside just as the massive diesel locomotive began to groan, its wheels slowly starting to turn against the iron rails.

"The open boxcar! Third one back!" Julian shouted over the deafening roar of the accelerating engine.

The night air was freezing, biting at their faces as they sprinted along the uneven gravel path beside the moving train. The third boxcar’s sliding door was half-open, revealing a dark, cavernous interior filled with wooden crates of industrial spare parts.

Elena reached the open door first, leaping up and grabbing the metal handle with both hands, hoisting herself inside with an athletic surge of adrenaline. She immediately turned around, leaning out dangerously far to extend her hand. "Leo! Give me your hand!"

Leo leaped off the gravel, his small body airborne for a terrifying second before Elena’s fingers locked securely around the collar of his yellow shirt and the fabric of his sleeve, hauling him upward into the safety of the boxcar. The boy scrambled inside, tumbling onto a pile of canvas tarps, coughing from the coal smoke and dust.

Julian was right behind them, sprinting with long, powerful strides. He grabbed the lower grab-iron of the boxcar just as the train picked up significant speed, his black suit jacket flapping violently in the slipstream. With a sharp grunt of effort, he hauled his frame upward, rolling through the open doorway and pulling the heavy sliding door shut just as the freight yard's high-intensity floodlights swept across their position.

Inside, the boxcar was plunged into deep shadows, illuminated only by the thin slivers of moonlight filtering through the gaps in the wooden planks. The rhythmic clack-clack of the wheels rolling over rail joints filled the space, vibrating through the floorboards and offering a steady, monotonous soundtrack to their desperate escape.

Julian slumped against a wooden crate, breathing heavily, adjusting his tie with a shaky hand. His black suit was scuffed with dirt and grease, and a small tear marred the fabric of his left sleeve.

Elena sat beside Leo, wrapping her arms around the trembling boy to warm him up. Her elegant red dress was now completely ruined, torn at the hem and stained with industrial grime, but her eyes burned with fierce survival. "We made it onto the train," she whispered, looking at Julian. "Now where does this line actually go?"

"Straight into the heart of the industrial belt," Julian replied, pulling out his encrypted phone to check the offline GPS map. "Away from Victor’s primary strongholds. We have roughly six hours before they track this specific freight manifest."
