Chapter 8: A Breach in the Perimeter

Before Julian could outline the final steps of their escape plan, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the doorway of the freight office. It wasn't the sound of settling wood or the shifting wind. It was the distinct sound of a tactical weapon's safety switch being disengaged.

Julian reacted instantly, shoving Elena and Leo behind a heavy oak sorting desk just as a blinding flash of white light illuminated the room.

"Don't move! Federal jurisdiction—hands where I can see them!" a harsh voice barked from the doorway.

Julian peeked around the edge of the desk, his eyes adjusting to the glare. Two figures stood in the doorway, clad in matte-black tactical gear with no visible insignia, holding high-powered carbines with laser sights fixed directly on the desk. They weren't federal agents. The tactical setup, the weapons handling, and the encrypted communication earpieces identified them instantly as Victor’s personal security enforcement squad.

"They bypassed local transit security," Julian muttered under his breath, his hand slipping toward his hidden holster.

"Don't do it, Julian," Elena whispered, gripping his forearm with terrifying intensity. "There are two of them, and Leo is right in the line of fire. You can't outshoot both rifles at this distance."

"We can't surrender either," Julian whispered back. "If Victor gets the boy, we’re all executed within the hour to tie up loose ends."

"Step away from the desk! Hands on your head, slow and visible!" the lead operative commanded, taking a measured step into the room, his weapon steady.

Julian slowly stood up, keeping his hands raised to shoulder height, deliberately positioning his body to shield Elena and Leo from the direct line of sight. "You’re making a mistake," Julian said, his voice remarkably calm and authoritative. "The security protocol you’re operating under was revoked by the board at midnight. If you pull that trigger, you aren't executing targets—you’re assassinating witnesses to a federal conspiracy."

The operative hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. It was the opening Julian had been calculating for.

With a sudden, violent motion, Julian kicked a rusted metal filing cabinet beside him. The heavy cabinet tipped over with a deafening crash, showering the floor with decades-old dust and metal debris, obscuring the operatives' vision in a thick, gray cloud.

"Run! To the train!" Julian yelled, grabbing Leo by the collar of his yellow shirt and hauling him upright, while Elena sprang forward, leading the way toward the rear exit door that opened directly onto the rail yard siding.
