Chapter 5: The Chase in the Dark

The moment Julian pushed the fire door open wide, the damp, chilled air of the underground garage rushed over them. He stepped out first, sweeping the shadows with his flashlight extinguished to avoid giving away their position, relying entirely on his night-vision training. "Move, quietly and fast," he hissed over his shoulder.
Elena followed closely, carrying Leo, whose arms were wrapped tightly around her neck. Every footstep felt agonizingly loud against the concrete floor, even though they were moving on the balls of their feet. The distant hum of the idling van seemed to grow louder as they slipped between a row of parked vehicles, weaving a zigzag path through the labyrinth of steel and shadow.
Ahead of them, the dim amber light flickered and died, plunging sector four into near-total darkness. Julian cursed silently, switching on his tactical flashlight for a single, brief second to locate the heavy iron grate that concealed the maintenance tunnel entrance. The beam cut through the gloom, illuminating a rusted padlock hanging from a reinforced frame.
"I can pick it," Julian muttered, pulling a slim metal toolkit from his inner jacket pocket with practiced ease. He knelt before the lock, his hands steady despite the adrenaline spiking through his veins. "Elena, keep watch behind the black sedan."
Elena nodded, pressing herself and Leo flat against the side of a dusty Mercedes. She strained her ears, listening past the sound of her own breathing. A sharp metallic ping echoed through the garage—the sound of a car door opening near the far exit ramp.
"Julian," she whispered urgently, her voice trembling. "They’re moving. They’re searching the aisles."
"Almost... got it," Julian grunted, applying pressure to the tension wrench. With a muffled click, the internal mechanism gave way, and the heavy padlock dropped into his palm. He pulled the iron grate open, revealing a dark, claustrophobic brick tunnel stretching into the earth.
"In. Go!" Julian commanded, pushing Leo through the opening first. Elena scrambled in right after the boy, the hem of her red dress snagging slightly on a jagged piece of iron before tearing free. Julian slipped inside last, pulling the heavy metal grate shut behind them and sliding a thick iron bolt into place from the inside, effectively sealing off the immediate pursuit.

Inside the tunnel, the air was thick with the smell of old dust and stagnant water. They were hidden from sight, but they were now trapped in a subterranean maze with no clear map and unknown dangers lurking further down the line.
Leo buried his face in Elena’s shoulder, crying silently now, his small frame shaking with exhaustion and fear. Julian clicked on his flashlight, casting a narrow beam of white light down the damp brick corridor, and began to walk.
