Chapter 2: Fractured Loyalties

The relentless buzzing of the smartphone cut through the heavy silence of the lobby, demanding an answer that none of them were truly prepared to give. Julian kept his hand firmly on Leo’s shoulder, his fingers digging in just enough to remind the boy of who held the authority here. Leo whimpered softly, pulling his yellow collar up as if it could shield him from the freezing glare of the man he was supposed to call father.
Elena stepped closer, her red dress swishing against the polished floor. She reached out and snatched the phone directly from the waitress's trembling grip, ignoring Julian’s immediate, lethal glare. "If you break this phone, Julian, the encrypted backup file drops automatically to every news outlet in the tristate area," Elena warned, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She hit the speakerphone icon with a sharp tap of her manicured nail.
"State your clearance code," Julian demanded, speaking directly into the device, his professional composure returning with terrifying speed.
For a moment, only static hissed through the small speaker. Then, a calm, mechanical voice responded. "Clearance code accepted, Director Vance. The perimeter of the East Wing has been compromised. Victor’s private security detail bypassed local law enforcement fifteen minutes ago. You have less than twenty minutes before they intercept your current location."
The words hit the room like physical blows. The waitress gasped, dropping her serving tray, the metallic clatter echoing off the high ceiling. She backed away toward the exit, realizing with absolute horror that she had just become a witness to something lethal. Elena didn't look at the waitress; her eyes remained locked on Julian. "You brought this on us," she whispered, the anger in her voice giving way to a profound, bone-deep fatigue. "Your obsession with Victor’s portfolio, your willingness to cut corners—it led straight to this lobby, and now this innocent boy is paying the price."
"Silence, Elena," Julian commanded, though his voice lacked its previous absolute authority. He looked down at Leo, whose messy light brown hair was damp with nervous sweat. The boy looked back at him with a mixture of fear and profound disappointment that cut Julian deeper than any physical weapon could have.

"Are we running again, Dad?" Leo whispered, his voice cracking.
Julian didn't answer immediately. He looked toward the revolving glass doors of the lobby, where the first shadows of approaching vehicles began to stretch across the pavement. The trap was closing.
