Chapter 15: A New Horizon

The afternoon sun hung low over the western horizon, casting a golden hue across the endless expanse of the American highway. Parked on the shoulder of the interstate was a faded blue 1998 pickup truck—purchased from an elderly farmer two towns back for cash, with no registration questions asked.
Leo sat in the middle of the bench seat, wearing a simple, clean cotton shirt that fit him properly, his messy light brown hair catching the golden sunlight through the windshield. He was holding a small map of the western states, tracing a route across mountains and deserts toward the Pacific coast with the tip of his finger.
Elena sat by the passenger-side door, her arm resting on the rolled-down window frame, feeling the warm wind blow through her hair as she watched the changing landscape unfold before them.
Julian gripped the steering wheel, his eyes fixed steadily on the open road ahead. The black suit and tie were gone, replaced by a simple flannel shirt and a worn denim jacket. He shifted gears smoothly, the engine humming a steady, reliable tune as they accelerated past a green highway sign pointing toward the horizon.
"Are we almost there, Dad?" Leo asked, looking up from the map with hopeful, bright eyes.
May you like
Julian glanced sideways at the boy, then at Elena, whose smile reflected the quiet promise of tomorrow. He pressed his foot gently down on the accelerator, sending the old truck forward into the fading light.
"We’re already home, Leo," Julian said softly. "We’re already home."
