Chapter 10: Confessions in the Dark

The rhythmic motion of the freight car created a hypnotic cradle, rocking the space as the train sped westward through the sprawling American countryside. The initial adrenaline spike had faded, leaving behind the heavy, hollow ache of exhaustion. Leo had finally fallen into a restless sleep, his head resting against Elena’s lap while she gently ran her fingers through his messy light brown hair, watching him with an expression of maternal devotion that completely softened her sharp features.

Julian sat across from them on an upturned wooden crate, staring down at the cracked screen of his satellite phone. The battery indicator flickered stubbornly at four percent—their last lifeline to the outside world was about to die permanently.

"You never answered my question back in the tunnel, Julian," Elena said softly, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the boy. "Why did you take him in the first place? If Victor was hunting his mother, why did you make yourself the target?"

Julian didn't look up immediately. He traced the cracked edge of the phone with his thumb, the silence stretching between them until the only sound was the steady roar of the train wheels against the steel tracks.

"Leo’s mother wasn't just an analyst for the firm," Julian finally spoke, his voice unusually raw and devoid of its usual corporate detachment. "She was my partner—not just in the field, but in every sense that mattered. When she discovered that Victor was funneling black-budget funds through our acquisitions to finance private paramilitary operations, she tried to leak the data to federal investigators."

"And Victor had her eliminated," Elena finished quietly, a shadow passing over her face.

"She managed to encrypt the core files and hide the decryption keys inside Leo’s genetic profile," Julian continued, lifting his gaze to meet Elena’s eyes. "A biometric ledger. That’s why Victor can't just kill the boy—without the biological keys embedded in Leo’s DNA, the stolen billions remain locked behind an impenetrable firewall. And that’s why I took him. Not out of sudden saintly charity, but because I was supposed to secure the asset for myself and rebuild my own standing in the syndicate."

Elena stared at him, a mix of horror and profound sadness washing over her. "You planned to use him just like Victor did."

May you like

"At first, yes," Julian admitted without hesitation, refusing to sugarcoat the dark reality of his past choices. "Power, influence, survival—those were the only metrics that mattered in my world. But living with him, watching him grow up in those sterile safe houses, calling me father even when I was cold and distant... it changed the math, Elena. The moment Victor’s enforcers cornered us in that hotel lobby today, I knew I couldn't hand him over. Not for all the money, not for all the power in the world."

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers pausing in Leo’s hair. "People can change, Julian. But redemption requires a very heavy toll. And we haven't paid the full price yet."
