Chapter 3: The Weight of a Secret

Julian’s hand finally slipped from Leo’s shoulder, leaving the boy shivering despite the warm indoor air. The realization that Victor was actively hunting them changed the entire equation of their existence. For years, Julian had believed he was the one pulling the strings, orchestrating corporate mergers and geopolitical leverage from the comfort of corner offices and private estates. Now, standing in a hotel lobby with a shattered sense of reality, he understood the grim truth: they had all been pawns in a much larger, darker game designed by a man who operated completely outside the law.

Elena pocketed the smartphone, her posture defensive and alert. She looked at the terrified waitress, who was now huddled near the potted ferns, desperate to be invisible. "Leave," Elena told the young woman quietly. "Go out the service exit, take the subway, and throw your sim card in the river. If anyone asks, you served us coffee and we left separately."

The waitress didn't need to be told twice. She bolted toward the back corridors, her uniform rustling sharply as she vanished from sight.

"That was a tactical mistake," Julian muttered, adjusting his black tie with a mechanical motion. "She’s a loose end."

"She’s a human being, Julian, which is something you stopped being a long time ago," Elena fired back, stepping protectively closer to Leo. She knelt down, bringing her eye level with the trembling boy. "Listen to me, Leo. You are safe with us. We are going to get you out of here, and no one is going to hurt you. Do you understand?"

Leo nodded slowly, though doubt lingered heavily in his wide, tearful eyes. He reached out and clutched a fold of Elena’s red dress, anchoring himself to her presence. The bond between the boy and Elena had always baffled Julian—an emotional attachment that defied the strict, utilitarian rules Julian had tried to impose on their household.

Julian pulled out his own encrypted satellite phone, dialing a pre-programmed emergency sequence that routed through three different continents before connecting. "We need the backup transport at the loading dock," Julian spoke in a hushed, urgent tone. "And disable the building's security cameras on the north side. Victor’s clean-up crew is already on site."

"Sir, the north dock is blocked by municipal construction," the voice on the other end replied. "You’ll have to move through the underground parking garage."

"Underground," Julian cursed under his breath. The garage was a labyrinth of shadows and blind spots—the ideal killing ground for a professional extraction team. But staying in the lobby was a death sentence. Julian looked at Elena and the boy. "Move. Now. Stay close behind me, and if you hear anything, hit the floor immediately."
