Chapter 9 - The Silicone Heir

The heavy white blanket fell slack against Clara’s knees, revealing the grim reality of what she had been clutching so fiercely through the entire ordeal. It wasn't a living child whimpering in the night air; it was a eerily lifelike silicone reborn doll, weighted with lead shot to mimic the exact heft and warmth of a six-month-old infant.

David stared down at the synthetic face of the doll, his breathing stopping entirely. The silence on the patio became absolute, heavier than the water in the pool, heavier than the secrets buried within the estate walls.

“Where is my son, Clara?” David asked, his voice shaking with a quiet, terrifying fury that seemed to drop the temperature around them by ten degrees.

Clara didn't answer. She dropped her arms to her sides, her fingers twitching uselessly against the green wrap dress she had borrowed from a closet upstairs earlier that evening. Her blonde hair hung in wet, tangled clumps around her hollow cheeks, and her manicured nails dug into her own palms until the skin turned white.

“You don’t have a son, David,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking into a bitter, broken laugh. “You never did. Not with me. I lost the pregnancy six months ago. I couldn't bear to tell you—not when you looked at me the way you did. Not when you started spending all your late nights working with her.” She glared venomously at Elena.

Elena stood motionless, her arms still crossed over her green dress. Her expression wasn't one of triumph, but of profound, heavy sorrow. She had suspected the truth weeks ago when Clara refused to let pediatricians examine the baby at home, but seeing it laid bare in the moonlight carried no joy.

Maya remained kneeling by the edge of the pool, water dripping from her grey uniform onto the stone. She looked at the silicone doll, then at Clara, the young maid’s heart aching with a sudden, overwhelming wave of pity that quickly turned to unease. If there was no baby, why had Clara staged the entire drowning scenario? Why push the panic button at midnight?

“If there is no baby, Clara,” David said, stepping closer, his eyes burning with a dangerous light, “then why did you scream that Maya pushed him in? What were you hiding out here in the dark?”

Clara smiled—a slow, unsettling grin that stretched too wide across her pale face. She reached slowly into the deep pocket of her dress, her fingers wrapping around something hard and metallic.

“I was hiding the real truth,” Clara hissed.

Before David could lunge forward, the heavy glass sliding doors behind them shattered from the inside out, showering the patio in a cascade of glittering shards.
