Chapter 11 - The Face Under the Fedora

The fedora tumbled across the broken glass, spinning to a halt near Maya’s bare feet. Underneath the dim patio lights, the man’s face was fully exposed. It wasn't an anonymous hitman or a shadowy syndicate operative; it was Marcus Vance, David’s chief executive vice president and trusted board member of twelve years.
David staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. The betrayal cut deeper than any corporate espionage or fabricated domestic crisis.
“Marcus?” David whispered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. “You? After everything we built together?”
Marcus wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his expression hardening as he kept the silenced pistol leveled at Elena, who held her silver revolver steady with both hands.
“You built it on my back, David!” Marcus snarled, his voice rising in pitch. “You took the credit for every major acquisition, every merger, while I handled the dirty work! Clara understood my value. Clara knew what I was worth!”
Clara stepped closer to Marcus, linking her arm through his trench coat as if they were partners at a high-society gala rather than co-conspirators in a violent corporate coup. She tossed her wet blonde hair over her shoulder, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph.
“We’re leaving, Marcus,” Clara said smoothly, her voice devoid of its earlier hysterical panic. “Let them have the estate. The offshore accounts are already cleared. By morning, we’ll be halfway to the Cayman Islands.”
Maya remained frozen against the concrete edge of the pool, her wet maid uniform sticking to her skin. Her mind raced. She looked at the gun in Marcus’s hand, then down at the shattered glass scattered across the patio. She knew too much now. If Marcus and Clara escaped, her own life wouldn't be worth a fraction of the gold drive in David’s pocket.
Elena kept her revolver locked dead on Marcus’s chest. She didn't blink, her breathing slow and controlled.
“You aren't going anywhere, Marcus,” Elena said, her voice ice-cold. “The perimeter gates were automatically locked the moment the security server detected the safe breach. You’re trapped.”
Marcus smiled, a cold, predatory smirk. He reached into his trench coat pocket with his free hand and pulled out a small, blinking remote detonator.

“You forgot one thing, Elena,” Marcus said softly, his thumb resting over the red button. “The estate isn't just locked. It’s wired.”
