Chapter 12 - The Red Button

The tiny red LED on the detonator pulsed like a dying heartbeat in the damp night air. The patio fell into an absolute, suffocating silence, broken only by the hum of the pool filter and the distant rumble of thunder rolling in from the hills.

David’s eyes darted from the detonator back to Marcus’s grinning face. “You rigged the house? Are you insane, Marcus? There are staff here—there are innocent people inside!”

“Collateral damage, David,” Marcus replied coldly, his thumb hovering inches above the plastic button. “Besides, you and Elena were always too smart for your own good. You left me no choice. Ten seconds after I press this switch, the main gas line running beneath the patio will rupture. This entire backyard—and everyone on it—will go up in flames. By morning, the fire department will rule it a tragic gas leak caused by a faulty pool heater.”

Clara smiled, leaning her head against Marcus’s shoulder. She looked at David with a look of absolute, chilling contempt. “Goodbye, David. You should have signed those papers when you had the chance.”

Elena didn't lower her gun, but her eyes flicked downward for a fraction of a second toward the pool edge. Maya caught the glance instantly. Through years of silent observation working in elite households, Maya had developed an uncanny ability to read micro-expressions. Elena wasn't hesitating out of fear; she was signaling a coordinate.

Maya’s eyes darted toward the heavy stone patio table sitting just three feet away from Marcus’s left side. Without waiting for a verbal command, Maya used every ounce of strength left in her exhausted body, lunged forward from the pool edge, and slammed her shoulder directly into the heavy iron base of the table.

The table skidded across the stone pavers with a screech of metal against concrete, catching Marcus squarely behind the knees.

Marcus stumbled backward with a startled curse, his arms flailing wildly. The silenced pistol flew from his right hand, skittering across the broken glass, while his left thumb slipped off the red button, slamming the detonator hard against the edge of the brick planter box.

The device cracked down the middle, the internal battery popping out and rolling harmlessly into a damp flowerbed.

“Now, Elena!” Maya screamed, hitting the ground and rolling away from the flailing men.
