Chapter 14 - Sirens in the Night

The blinding wash of red and blue cruiser lights poured over the brick walls of the patio, transforming the dark courtyard into a stage of flashing neon shadows. Heavy footsteps crunched rapidly across the gravel driveway, followed immediately by the shouting of armed officers breaching the side gate.
“Police! Nobody move!” a commanding voice echoed through the courtyard.
Three officers in tactical gear swarmed the patio instantly, their flashlights cutting through the humid air. Two of them converged on David and Marcus, hauling Marcus off the ground with practiced efficiency and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. Marcus kept his head down, his face pale and contorted with bitter defeat as they dragged him toward the waiting cruiser.
The third officer moved toward Clara and Maya. Maya slowly released her grip on Clara’s wrists, pushing herself up from the damp stone and stepping back to give the authorities room. Clara remained on her knees for a moment, her wet blonde hair sticking to her face, glaring up at the flashing lights with a hollow, vacant stare.
“Clara Davis, you’re under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy, and attempted destruction of property,” the officer stated coldly, lifting her to her feet and securing cuffs around her slender wrists.
Clara didn't scream. She didn't cry. She allowed herself to be led away into the night without a single word, casting one final, lingering look of pure venom toward Elena before disappearing around the corner of the house.
David stood near the center of the patio, brushing shards of glass off the knees of his bathrobe. He looked exhausted, older by ten years than he had when he first walked out of the house just half an hour ago. He turned slowly, his eyes locking onto Elena, who stood watching the cruisers depart with her arms resting calmly at her sides.
“It’s over,” David said quietly, his voice raspy.
“The legal battle is only just beginning, David,” Elena replied, her tone softening just a fraction. She then turned her gaze toward Maya, who stood shivering by the pool edge, hugging her wet uniform around her.
“You saved us tonight, Maya,” Elena said, walking over to the young maid and placing a steady hand on her shoulder. “More than you know.”

Maya looked down, offering a small, exhausted smile. But as the flashing lights continued to sweep across the surface of the water, a stray bubble popped from the deep end, bringing something dark and metallic floating back to the surface.
