Chapter 13 - The Final Stand

Elena didn't hesitate. With a sharp, practiced motion, she lowered her revolver just an inch and fired a warning shot directly into the brick wall behind Marcus, sending a spray of red dust raining down over his shoulders.
“Stay down, Marcus!” Elena commanded, her voice ringing out with absolute authority.
Marcus let out an animalistic growl, lunging blindly toward the fallen pistol gleaming among the shattered glass. But David was faster. With a burst of raw adrenaline, David tackled Marcus mid-air, sending both men crashing hard onto the stone patio. A scuffle ensued, heavy grunts and the sound of skin hitting concrete echoing off the surrounding walls.
Clara shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the glass door frame. She looked around frantically for an escape route, but the French doors were still locked from the inside, and the perimeter gates were sealed tight. Her eyes landed on the heavy brass poker resting in a stand by the outdoor fireplace. She lunged for it.
Maya was back on her feet in an instant. Ignoring the stinging cuts on her bare feet from the broken glass, she intercepted Clara just as the older woman’s fingers brushed the brass handle. Maya tackled Clara around the waist, bringing them both down in a messy tangle of wet fabric and limbs.
“Get off me, you little peasant!” Clara hissed, scratching furiously at Maya’s arms.
Maya gritted her teeth, pinning Clara’s wrists against the stone. She didn't strike back; she simply held her ground with the stubborn resilience of someone who had fought for everything she ever owned.
On the other side of the patio, David pinned Marcus to the ground, pressing his knee firmly into the other man’s chest. Marcus stopped struggling, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his eyes darting toward the blinking security camera high on the brick overhang.
Elena walked over slowly, standing over the two men. She holstered her silver revolver, reached into her pocket, and pulled out her backup radio.
“This is Unit Four. Perimeter secured. Send local authorities and tactical units to the rear courtyard immediately,” Elena spoke calmly into the device.

Within ninety seconds, the wail of approaching sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban streets, growing louder by the second as flashing blue and red lights painted the night sky in frantic strokes.
