Chapter 3 - The Glowing Screen

The patio suddenly felt suffocatingly quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of water from the diving board into the pool below. Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. She clutched the baby tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white against the damp white blanket.
“What security camera?” Clara demanded, her voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing hiss. She tried to scramble backward, but the legs of the patio lounger jammed against a potted fern, trapping her.
Elena pulled her sleek smartphone from the pocket of her green wrap dress. The screen illuminated her face in a sharp, bluish glow, casting deep shadows beneath her cheekbones. She didn't unlock it immediately; instead, she let the silent threat of the device hang heavily in the damp night air.
“The new system I installed last week,” Elena said calmly, her thumb hovering over the glass. “The one that covers the entire perimeter, including the patio, the deep end, and the nursery balcony. It records twenty-four hours a day, Clara. Motion-activated, cloud-synced.”
Maya slowly pushed herself up from the concrete, wringing out the hem of her grey maid uniform. Water pooled around her bare feet. She looked at Elena, then at Clara, her expression shifting from terror to a quiet, resolute curiosity. Maya knew she hadn't pushed the child. She had been dusting the patio table near the sliding glass doors when she saw the small body tumble over the ledge. But seeing the footage would mean absolute proof—or absolute ruin.
“Show us,” Maya whispered, her voice raspy from swallowing pool water.
Clara let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that sounded entirely devoid of humor. “You edited it! You two are friends—you’ve been plotting to get me out of this house since the day I moved in with David!”
Elena stepped closer, her expression hardening. She tapped the screen, and a video player popped up, loading a high-definition file timestamped precisely at 11:42 PM. The audio picked up the ambient crickets, followed by the faint sound of a sliding glass door opening.
“David is asleep upstairs,” Elena said quietly. “He hasn’t seen this yet. But he will.”
On the small screen, the video began to play. A figure stepped out onto the patio holding a white bundle. But the figure wasn’t Maya.

Clara lunged forward with a sudden, feral shriek, swatting the phone directly out of Elena’s hand. The device clattered against the stone patio, the screen instantly shattering into a spiderweb of glowing cracks.
