Chapter 6 - The Blinking Red Light

The tiny red light on the security camera blinked rhythmically in the darkness, casting a faint, crimson pulse over David’s shoulder as he stared up at it. The heavy silence of the night was broken only by the soft, rhythmic splashing of the pool filter and the muffled whimpers of the baby still wrapped tightly in Clara’s damp blanket.
David’s gaze slowly drifted downward from the lens to Clara’s face. The theatrical sobbing had stopped entirely, replaced by a rigid, unnatural stillness. Clara’s fingers dug deeper into the fabric of David’s bathrobe, her knuckles pressing white against his chest.
“David,” Clara whispered, her voice tight and warning. “You don’t actually believe them over me, do you? After everything we’ve built? After our son?”
David didn't answer immediately. He gently pried Clara’s arms away from his waist, stepping back just enough to create a physical barrier between them. The movement was small, but to everyone on the patio, it carried the weight of an earthquake. Clara’s breath hitched, her eyes flashing with sudden, unveiled malice before she quickly masked it behind a hurt expression.
“Elena,” David said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “You said the camera recorded it.”
“It did,” Elena replied steadily, her arms remaining crossed over her green dress. She didn't gloat; she merely stated the fact. “Or at least, the cloud server automatically backed it up before Clara managed to shatter my physical device against the patio stones.”
Clara let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her mask slipping completely. “You think a cloud server saves everything? Networks fail, Elena! Servers crash! Files get corrupted all the time!”
David turned his head sharply toward Clara, his eyes narrowing. “How did you know the file was on a server if you didn't already know what the camera captured, Clara?”
The patio air grew instantly frigid. Clara opened her mouth, but no words came out. Her jaw worked silently as she searched desperately for a lie, her eyes darting toward the dark French doors and then back to David’s unyielding face.
Maya stood a few feet away, wrapping her arms around her shivering body, watching the domestic trap close tightly around the woman who had accused her just minutes prior.
“David,” Clara stammered, her voice losing its polished edge. “You’re twisting my words. I just meant—obviously she’s lying about a camera, otherwise why wouldn't she just play it right now?”
Elena reached into the pocket of her green dress and pulled out her iPad mini, which had remained safe and dry inside the house until she grabbed it on her way out. She tapped the screen twice, bypassed the facial recognition, and turned the display toward David.
“The local backup syncs instantly to my tablet,” Elena said softly. “Watch, David.”
Before Elena could press play, the heavy oak doors of the house burst open again, and a panicked voice echoed from the hallway.
