Chapter 1 - The Accusation at Midnight

The moon cast a cold, silver glare over the surface of the backyard pool, illuminating the turbulent ripples that still disturbed the water. Clara stood on the manicured stone patio, her thirty-five-year-old frame trembling not from the night air, but from sheer, unadulterated fury. Her blonde hair fell in disarray around her shoulders, framing a face twisted in panic and rage. Cradled tightly against her chest was a tiny bundle wrapped in a thick, white woolen blanket. Inside that bundle, a six-month-old infant let out a soft, confused whimper, sensing the electric tension in the atmosphere. Clara pointed a rigid, shaking finger directly at the edge of the water.

“She pushed him in! I saw her do it!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with maternal desperation.

Elena, standing a few paces away with her arms tightly crossed over her green wrap dress, did not flinch. At thirty, her dark brown hair was neatly tucked behind her ears, and her eyes remained narrowed, scanning the scene with clinical detachment. She surveyed the water, the frantic mother, and finally the shivering figure huddled on the pool deck.

At the water's edge sat Maya, twenty-five, her maid uniform thoroughly soaked and clinging desperately to her skin. Her wet brown hair plastered itself across her pale forehead, and tears mixed freely with the pool water dripping from her chin. She looked up at Clara with wide, terrified eyes, chest heaving from exertion and shock.

“I jumped in to save him! I pulled him out!” Maya sobbed desperately, her voice breaking as she clutched her bruised knees.

Elena shifted her weight, letting her arms drop to her sides before speaking in a measured, calm tone that cut through the hysteria.

“Is that true?” Elena asked, looking directly at Maya.

Clara gasped, stepping forward with furious denial and wide, unblinking eyes. She clutched the baby tighter to her chest, glaring at Elena as if she had just betrayed them all.

“Look at her, she’s lying to save herself!” Clara shrieked, her voice echoing off the surrounding brick walls. She paced frantically near the edge of the water, gesturing wildly toward the house. “What is going on here?”

As Clara took another frantic step backward, her expensive nude heel caught on the edge of a landscape light wire, sending her stumbling off balance toward the deep end of the pool.
