Chapter 9 - The Ghost on the Stairs

The steaming cup of tea rattled violently against the porcelain saucer in Clara’s hands, the liquid sloshing over the rim as she stared across the vast, marble-floored hallway. The federal agents, Lorenzo, Sterling, and Elena all froze, their collective attention snapping toward the terrified young maid cowering near the servants' staircase.

"Clara," Lorenzo said sharply, his voice cutting through the heavy tension like a blade. "Get back inside the kitchen. This does not concern you."

"I... I dropped the spoon, sir," Clara stammered, her voice trembling so badly the words were barely intelligible. She didn't move away; instead, her eyes remained glued to the leather folder in Sterling’s hands. A look of sudden, profound recognition crossed her pale face. "That... that's not just a corporate ledger. I know that cover."

Sterling’s brow furrowed, his predatory grin fading into a look of genuine confusion and suspicion. He turned his head toward the girl, lowering the folder slightly. "What did you say, little girl? What do you know about this book?"

"Victor, shut your mouth," Elena snapped, stepping forward from the double doors, her composure fracturing once more as panic flared back into her dark eyes. "She’s just a confused domestic worker. She doesn't know anything about corporate assets."

"No, Mrs. Vance," Clara said, her voice suddenly finding a strange, steady strength that shocked everyone in the room. She took two hesitant steps out from the shadows of the staircase, her black and white uniform stark against the dark wainscoting. "I cleaned the private study every single morning at five a.m. Last month, when you thought I was downstairs doing the laundry, I walked in to return the dusting cloth. You and Mr. Sterling were standing right over that exact book."

Sterling’s face drained of color. He looked from Clara back to Elena, the implicit alliance between them fracturing instantly under the weight of an unexpected witness. "You stupid idiot," Sterling hissed at Elena. "You told me the staff never came up to the west wing before eight!"

"She lies!" Elena shrieked, lunging forward with a sudden, violent burst of energy, her hands clawing toward the air before the lead federal agent grabbed her arms and pinned her back against his chest. "She’s making it up! Lorenzo, she’s a thief, she’s conspiring with them!"

"Let her speak, Elena," Lorenzo commanded, his voice cold and resonant. He didn't look at his wife; his unblinking gaze remained fixed on the young maid standing by the stairs. "Go on, Clara. What did you hear them say about that ledger?"

Clara swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling beneath her uniform. She looked directly at Lorenzo, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I heard Mr. Sterling tell Mrs. Vance that once the estate was successfully transferred into the anonymous trust, they wouldn't just own the company—they would own the house, the accounts, and everything else. And he said that if you ever found out, the forged signature on the deed would send you to prison for fraud, not them."

The silence that followed was absolute. Even the flashing red-and-blue emergency lights outside seemed to slow down, casting long, dramatic shadows across the reflective marble floor.

Lorenzo slowly turned his head to look at Victor Sterling. The restrained anger in his posture vanished, replaced by a terrifying, lethal stillness. He reached out his hand toward Sterling, his fingers curling into a fist.

"Hand me the book, Victor," Lorenzo whispered, stepping forward. "Now."

Sterling hesitated, his hands trembling slightly as the full weight of the federal presence and the eyewitness testimony crashed down around him. He slowly extended the leather-bound folder toward Lorenzo’s outstretched hand.

Suddenly, the front security gate intercom mounted on the wall beside the double doors hissed loudly, broadcasting a frantic message from the estate’s outer guard booth: “Mr. Vance! We have an unscheduled vehicle ramming the service entrance! It’s—"

Before the guard could finish his sentence, a deafening explosion echoed from the back of the property, shaking the massive chandeliers overhead and plunging the hallway into sudden, terrifying darkness.
