Chapter 5 - The Glass Shards at Our Feet

The sharp crunch of crystal underfoot punctuated the heavy silence. Lorenzo stopped walking, his polished leather shoes resting inches from the largest fragment of the shattered pitcher. He did not flinch, nor did his expression shift into the frantic panic Elena had clearly anticipated. Instead, a slow, melancholy sigh escaped his lips, a sound of profound exhaustion rather than defeat.
"You always did overestimate your own cleverness, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice barely above a whisper. He looked down at the glittering debris scattered across the reflective floor, then back up at his wife. "Do you honestly believe I didn't anticipate an SEC audit?"
Elena’s triumphant smile faltered at the edges. Her dark eyes narrowed as she searched his face for a tremor of fear, a twitch of anxiety, anything that would confirm her weapon had struck its target. Finding only an impenetrable calm, a cold knot of dread began to form in her stomach.
"Don't play games with me," Elena snapped, stepping backward until her shoulder pressed against the heavy wood of the double doors. "The documents I provided implicate you directly in the offshore shell companies. The wire transfers bear your electronic signature. The federal investigators already have the files!"
"They do," Lorenzo agreed smoothly, taking another slow step toward her. He crossed his arms over his black shirt, the white pocket square catching the chandelier light. "Which is why I spent the entire morning at the federal prosecutor’s office clearing my name before I ever stepped foot on the corporate summit jet."
Elena shook her head violently, her long dark hair whipping across her shoulders. "That's impossible. The files were encrypted with a key only I possessed. You couldn't have accessed the core database without triggering a security lockout."
"You forgot about the master override protocol, Elena," Lorenzo said softly, tilting his head. "The one you insisted we install when we merged our assets five years ago—the one linked to my biometric iris scan. You wrote the code, but you clearly forgot who holds the master keys to this entire empire."
The blood rushed in Elena’s ears, drowning out the ambient sounds of the massive estate. The foundation she had meticulously built over the past six months was not a weapon against her husband; it was a trap he had engineered, guiding her step by step into her own undoing.
"You knew," Elena breathed, the realization crashing over her like a tidal wave. "You knew I was planning to leave. You watched me set up the accounts, watched me falsify the documents, and you just let me walk right into the trap."
"I gave you enough rope," Lorenzo corrected, his voice dropping to a harsh, resonant register that sent a shiver down her spine. "Because I needed absolute, undeniable proof of your intentions before I filed for legal separation."
Before Elena could muster a response, the heavy front doors behind her suddenly swung open wide. Two men in dark suits and federal enforcement windbreakers stepped into the hallway, their badges gleaming under the bright chandeliers.

"Mrs. Elena Vance?" the lead agent announced, pulling a document from his breast pocket. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire tampering, and conspiracy to commit financial espionage."
