Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Library

The silence that fell over the hallway was absolute, save for the slow, rhythmic dripping of melted ice water pooling on the polished marble. Elena stood paralyzed, the empty glass pitcher feeling suddenly heavier in her slackened grip than it had when it was full. The elaborate chandelier overhead seemed to spin slightly, casting dancing prisms of light across the expensive wallpaper.
"You hacked my phone as well," Elena whispered, the accusation tasting like ash in her mouth. She didn't deny the voicemail. The game of plausible deniability was entirely dead, crushed under the weight of undeniable technical proof.
"I didn't hack anything," Lorenzo corrected smoothly, turning his back on her for a fraction of a second to retrieve his discarded suit jacket from the floor. He dusted off the lapel with a flick of his palm before draping it over his forearm. "Your phone was synchronized with the home automation system. When you left it on the kitchen island this morning to take a shower, the server automatically backed up your audio files to my office dashboard. Technology has a way of exposing secrets, Elena. It lacks human vanity."
Clara remained kneeling on the floor, trembling violently as she pulled her black and white skirt closer around her legs. She looked up at Lorenzo, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound relief. "Thank you, sir," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I didn't want any trouble. I just... I needed this job to pay for my mother's dialysis."
Lorenzo glanced down at the young maid, his expression softening by an imperceptible fraction. "Stand up, Clara," he said gently, extending a hand down toward her.
Clara stared at his outstretched hand for a moment before placing her small, work-roughened palm in his. Lorenzo pulled her up effortlessly, stabilizing her when her legs wobbled from the cold and stress.
"Go down to the kitchen," Lorenzo instructed quietly, keeping his eyes on Clara. "Ask Mrs. Gable to fix you a cup of hot tea. Then pack your things. I am having a car take you to a secure residence on the other side of the city tonight. You will not have to worry about your mother's medical bills ever again. They are fully covered, permanently."
Clara pressed a hand to her mouth, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Oh, thank you, Mr. Vance. Thank you so much." She bowed her head respectfully and hurried down the hallway, her footsteps clicking rapidly against the floor until they faded away entirely.
Elena watched the maid leave with a cold, dead look in her eyes. When the heavy doors at the end of the hall clicked shut, she turned back to Lorenzo, letting the glass pitcher slip from her fingers. It shattered loudly against the marble, sending shards flying across their feet.
"You think you've won," Elena laughed softly, a chilling sound that held no humor. "You think buying off a maid saves you from what is already in motion."
Lorenzo stepped over a glittering shard of glass without looking down. "What is in motion, Elena?"

"The federal investigation into your corporate accounts," Elena smiled, her eyes gleaming with malice. "I didn't empty the trust for Zurich. I handed the forensic audit directly to the SEC this morning before I came home."
