Chapter 8 - The Weight of Paper

The thick leather-bound folder in Victor Sterling’s hand seemed to absorb all the light in the grand hallway. The flashing crimson and blue emergency lights outside painted erratic shadows across its spine, casting an ominous aura over the entire scene. Lorenzo’s gaze locked onto the brown leather, his usually impassible face tightening as a muscle feathered along his jawline.
"Victor," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal quietness that made even the federal agents pause. "You were supposed to be on a flight to Geneva three days ago. Your severance package was cleared, your non-disclosure agreement signed and notarized."
Sterling stepped further into the hallway, his boots crunching loudly over the shattered glass of the crystal pitcher Elena had dropped earlier. He didn't flinch at the broken crystal; instead, he smiled wider, a cold, predatory expression that reached his eyes.
"Geneva is lovely this time of year, Lorenzo, but I realized something crucial while packing my bags," Sterling replied, walking with slow, deliberate steps until he stood mere feet away from Lorenzo and Elena. "A non-disclosure agreement isn't worth the paper it’s printed on if the company issuing the severance goes under federal investigation. And thanks to your dear wife’s little audit, that ship is sinking fast."
Elena stood back against the double doors, watching the confrontation unfold with renewed confidence. The panic had drained entirely from her face, replaced by a cold, calculating detachment. She adjusted the cuffs of her white dress, regaining her posture.
"You see, Lorenzo?" Elena said softly, her voice carrying across the silent hall. "You thought you could outsmart me by scrubbing the servers and cutting a deal with the prosecutors. But you always underestimate the people you discard along the way."
The lead federal agent stepped between the two men, resting his hand firmly on his holster. He looked at Sterling with intense scrutiny. "Mr. Sterling, you are an unrepresented party in an active federal investigation. Hand over that ledger immediately, or you will be detained for obstruction of justice and possession of classified corporate documents."
Sterling didn't flinch. He slowly lowered the leather folder, holding it out not to the federal agent, but directly toward Lorenzo. "Before I hand anything over to the government, Agent, I think Mr. Vance needs to read page forty-two. Because that page doesn't just detail his offshore accounts. It details the exact date he transferred the title of this entire estate into an anonymous trust—leaving his wife with nothing in the event of a divorce."
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flashed with sudden, controlled fury. He took a sharp step forward, closing the distance between himself and Sterling so fast that the former CFO instinctively jerked backward.
"You arrogant bastard," Lorenzo muttered, his voice shaking with a rage he had restrained all evening. "You stole that ledger from my private vault."
Before Sterling could reply, a loud, metallic clatter echoed from the servants' staircase at the far end of the hallway, followed by a sharp gasp.

Lorenzo and Sterling both turned their heads toward the sound. Peering cautiously around the corner of the staircase was Clara, holding a tray with a steaming cup of tea, her eyes wide with absolute horror as she stared directly at the open leather folder in Sterling’s hands.
