Chapter 1 - The Broken Mirror of Truth

The heavy crystal pitcher slipped slightly in Elena’s damp grip, the sharp clink of ice cubes echoing unnaturally against the vast, marble-floored hallway. Her knuckles turned stark white as she stared at Lorenzo, her heart hammering violently behind the pristine fabric of her white dress. The chandeliers overhead cast a cold, unforgiving light upon the tableau: the kneeling maid, the open double doors framing the dark evening, and Lorenzo standing with his hands locked behind his back.

"Finish what you were saying," Lorenzo commanded, his voice devoid of anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. His dark eyes remained fixed on Elena, entirely ignoring the trembling woman on the floor.

Elena swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling beneath the fine silk. "What are you doing home, Lorenzo? You weren't supposed to return from the corporate summit until midnight."

"That wasn't my question," Lorenzo replied smoothly, stepping one pace forward. The polished floor reflected his immaculate black suit jacket and the crisp white pocket square. "I asked you to finish your sentence to Clara."

Panic flared behind Elena’s dark eyes, sharp and unmistakable. She turned her body slightly, using the glass pitcher as a physical barrier. "She became hysterical. She overheard a private conversation, Lorenzo. Surely you don't believe a maid over me? You know how imaginative the domestic staff can be, especially ones we pulled from the agency downtown."

Clara pressed her face against the cold stone, her black and white uniform slightly stained with spilled cleaning water. She did not dare look up, but her shoulders shook with suppressed sobs.

Lorenzo slowly began to untbutton the single button of his suit jacket. His movements were deliberate, slow, and hypnotic. "She didn't imagine the ledger on your desk, Elena. Nor did she imagine the wire transfer confirmation glowing on your laptop screen."

Elena’s breath hitched, the color draining entirely from her face. The pitcher shook violently, water sloshing over the brim and splashing onto the reflective floor. "You... you accessed my private files?"

Lorenzo shrugged off his black suit jacket and let it drop heavily to the floor, right beside the kneeling maid. He looked directly into Elena’s panicked eyes with a terrifying, unreadable calm.

"I didn't need to," Lorenzo whispered, taking another slow step toward her. "Your lawyer called my cell thirty minutes ago to confirm the asset freeze."
