Chapter 7 - Flashing Lights in the Driveway

The sharp, strobing crimson and blue light bled through the glass panels of the double doors, painting long, frantic streaks across the white marble floors. The distant sound of shouting echoed from the grand courtyard below, followed by the heavy thud of car doors slamming shut.

The lead federal agent paused, his hand hovering over the handcuffs at his belt. He glanced over his shoulder toward the open entrance, his brow furrowing in irritation. "Report," he spoke sharply into the radio clipped to his lapel.

A static-heavy voice crackled back through the small speaker: “Agent Vance, we’ve got an unauthorized vehicle breaching the perimeter gate. It’s bypassing the security checkpoints entirely. Requesting backup at the main portico.”

Elena’s expression shifted instantly. The panic that had threatened to overwhelm her moments before vanished, replaced by a sharp, calculating gleam in her dark eyes. She tilted her head slightly, letting out a low, humorless laugh that cut through the hum of the cooling system.

"It appears," Elena murmured, her voice dripping with dangerous satisfaction, "that someone else was invited to our little family reunion tonight, Lorenzo."

Lorenzo’s calm demeanor fractured for the first time. His dark eyes narrowed as he looked past the agents toward the courtyard. "Who?" he asked, the single word falling like a lead weight between them.

"An old friend of yours," Elena replied, stepping back slightly as the federal agents turned their attention toward the open doorway. "Someone who didn't appreciate being cut out of the merger negotiations three months ago. Someone who holds the real ledger."

Heavy footsteps pounded up the grand exterior stone steps outside. Before the federal agents could draw their sidearms, the heavy double doors were shoved violently open, slamming back against the mahogany walls with a deafening crash.

Framed in the doorway stood Victor Sterling, Lorenzo’s former chief financial officer, flanked by two armed private security guards. Sterling’s black overcoat was unbuttoned, revealing an expensive suit underneath, and a smug, predatory grin spread across his weathered face.

"Good evening, Lorenzo," Sterling called out, his voice booming through the cavernous hallway. "I hope I’m not interrupting the domestic arrangements. But I figured if the federal authorities were going to raid the house tonight, I should probably hand over the original copies of your offshore tax shelters in person."

Lorenzo stood completely still, his eyes fixed on his former CFO. The temperature in the hallway seemed to plummet instantly.

Sterling reached inside his overcoat and pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder, holding it up like a trophy. "You forgot to account for the physical ledger, Lorenzo. And unlike digital files, paper cannot be deleted with a remote server override."
