Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

The heavy wool of Lorenzo’s suit jacket lay crumpled on the pristine floor like a discarded shadow. Elena stared down at it, her mind racing desperately through a labyrinth of collapsing lies. The icy water inside the glass pitcher felt heavy, dragging her wrists down. She forced her facial micro-expressions to smooth over, trading panic for a mask of deeply wounded dignity.
"My lawyer?" Elena managed a bitter, brittle laugh, shaking her head as if dealing with a troubled child. "Lorenzo, have you been drinking at the summit? You are letting business paranoia infect our home. I spoke with counsel weeks ago about restructuring our philanthropic trusts for tax purposes. You gave me power of attorney for the foundation accounts specifically to handle these complex matters."
Lorenzo did not blink. He stood tall, his black shirt and pristine white pocket square emphasizing the stark monochromatic austerity of his presence. He did not raise his voice. He did not gesture with his hands. He simply closed the distance between them by half, his gaze heavy and analytical.
"The philanthropic trust accounts were emptied forty-eight hours ago," Lorenzo said quietly. His voice carried across the high ceilings of the grand hallway, bouncing off the antique mirrors. "The destination account isn't a charity, Elena. It’s an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name."
On the floor, Clara whimpered softly, pressing her hands harder against her ears as if trying to block out a nightmare she could not wake from.
Elena’s throat tightened. The casual mention of her maiden name—a secret identity she had legally dissolved five years ago—shattered her composure. She gripped the handle of the glass pitcher so tightly her fingers ached. "Where did you get that file? Who gave you access to my private records?"
"That is entirely beside the point," Lorenzo replied, his tone remaining infuriatingly level. "The real question is why you felt the need to liquidate our primary holdings while I was away negotiating the merger that keeps this entire estate afloat."
"Because you were drowning us!" Elena snapped, the restrained facade finally cracking completely. The ice inside the pitcher shifted with a loud, sharp snap. "Your pride is going to ruin everything we built! I was securing our future, not stealing from you!"
Lorenzo took another step forward, stopping just inches away from her. He reached out slowly, his fingers hovering over the rim of the glass pitcher. "You weren't securing our future, Elena. You were packing a bag."

With a sudden, calculated movement, Lorenzo’s hand shot out and clamped firmly around Elena’s wrist, forcing her fingers to loosen their grip on the pitcher.
