Chapter 6 - The Weight of the Badge

The heavy oak doors seemed to swallow the warmth of the hallway, leaving only the sterile chill of the federal badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers. Elena stood frozen against the doorway, her white dress contrasting sharply with the dark uniforms of the two enforcement officers who now flanked her husband. The sound of their heavy leather shoes clicking against the polished marble felt like a countdown.

"There must be some mistake," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of practiced, icy elegance. She didn't look at the agents; her dark eyes remained locked entirely on Lorenzo. "My husband is confused. This is a private civil matter regarding our estate, not a federal case."

The lead agent, a tall man with sharp graying hair and an impassive expression, didn't blink. He extended the warrant toward her, the crisp paper rustling in the quiet air. "Mrs. Vance, we have certified copies of the digital signatures, the unauthorized wire routing logs, and sworn affidavits from your financial consultants confirming systematic embezzlement over a fourteen-month period."

Elena refused to take the paper. She tilted her chin up, her jaw set tight. "Fabricated. Every single byte of it. Lorenzo engineered this entire scenario to block our impending divorce settlement."

Lorenzo didn't raise his voice, nor did he step forward to assist her. He simply watched her with a detached, clinical curiosity, as if observing a rare specimen behind laboratory glass. "The courts don't rely on domestic disputes, Elena. They rely on cryptographic proof. And as you pointed out yourself, the electronic trail leads directly to your private IP address."

"You manipulated the routing logs!" Elena shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings, losing its composure entirely for a split second before she violently reined it back in. She took a deep, shuddering breath, smoothing the front of her white dress with trembling fingers. "You will regret this, Lorenzo. When my legal team tears your corporate empire apart in open court, you'll be begging for a settlement."

"Your legal team resigned twenty minutes ago," Lorenzo replied softly, reaching into his pocket to pull out a small leather cardholder. He tossed it casually onto a small mahogany side table. "Once they reviewed the federal indictment and realized you attempted to implicate their firm in the money laundering scheme, they dropped your representation entirely."

Elena stared at the cardholder as if it were a venomous snake. Her chest heaved beneath the fine silk fabric, her eyes darting between the federal agents and her husband. The trap was absolute. There were no hidden exits, no offshore accounts to flee to, and no loyal allies left in the vast, hollow estate.

"Put your hands behind your back, Mrs. Vance," the agent commanded, stepping closer and reaching for his cuffs.

Before the cold metal could touch her wrists, Elena’s gaze shifted to the dark double doors behind the agents. A sudden, chaotic noise rose from the driveway outside—the muffled sound of shouting voices and flashing red-and-blue emergency lights cutting through the estate's security gates.
