Chapter 9 - The Shadow Behind the Lace

The heavy velvet curtains parted slowly, sliding across the polished brass rod with a faint, whispering hiss. Standing in the gap between the glass pane and the lace was not an armed syndicate operative or one of Victor’s thugs, but a pale, trembling woman in a torn maid’s uniform. Her dark hair was matted with sweat, and her eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror as she pressed her back hard against the window frame.
"Mr. Vance, don't shoot," she choked out, her hands raised in a defensive gesture, trembling violently. "I didn't know they were going to take her. Marcus... Marcus paid me to unlock the side service door, but I swear I didn't know they'd snatch the little girl!"
Julian stopped mid-stride, his hand pausing inches from his hidden blade. His dark eyes drilled into the terrified woman, analyzing every micro-expression, every tremor in her hands, searching for any sign of deception. His stern facial expression remained unyielding, but the absolute rage simmering beneath his skin radiated outward into the small nursery.
"Who was with him?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a suppressed fury that made the maid flinch as if struck. "Who else besides Marcus and my uncle Victor has access to this wing?"
The maid swallowed hard, her throat bobbing convulsively as tears spilled over her lower lashes. "I... I don't know his name, sir. But he had a burn scar across the left side of his neck, shaped like a crescent moon. He spoke with a heavy foreign accent, and he drove a matte-black armored van with no license plates. They put Miss Lily in the back, and... and they went toward the old brickworks by the river."
Julian didn't blink. The description matched a ghost from his past—a ruthless enforcer named Kael, a man presumed locked away in a maximum-security black site overseas. If Kael was out, and Victor was back, this wasn't just a corporate hostile takeover anymore; it was an execution disguised as a legal foreclosure. They were planning to burn the entire empire down to the ash, with Lily and Julian trapped inside the pyre.
"Listen to me very carefully," Julian said, stepping closer until he towered over the shaking maid. "You are going to walk out the front service gates right now, use the emergency beacon I just activated, and wait for the federal marshals. Tell Agent Vance everything you just told me. If you lie, or if you run, my security grid will hunt you down before you reach the tree line."
"I swear, Mr. Vance! I'll tell them everything!" she sobbed, scrambling past him toward the doorway, her footsteps echoing frantically down the corridor until they faded into silence.
Julian turned back to the center of the nursery. He picked up the wooden doll with the porcelain face and the silver letter opener, sliding the note into his pocket. He unbuttoned the cuffs of his black shirt, rolling them up past his forearms to reveal a maze of old scars and hardened muscle, before shrugging off his dark green suit jacket and tossing it onto the white-tufted chair.
He walked out of the mansion into the cold, damp night air, stepping past the stacked luggage bags by the double doors and heading straight for the gravel drive where his custom matte-black interceptor sat waiting in the shadows.

He climbed behind the steering wheel, revving the high-performance engine until it roared like a caged beast. As the digital dashboard illuminated, displaying the live GPS route to the abandoned brickworks by the river, a red flashing warning light blinked on the console, accompanied by a synthetic alert voice: Warning: Outgoing signal intercepted. Remote detonation countdown initiated.
