Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs and the Heirloom

The metallic click of the steel handcuffs locking around Marcus’s wrists sounded like a gunshot in the silent, vaulted hallway. Marcus thrashed violently against the officer holding him, his expensive dark blue suit tearing slightly at the shoulder seam as he was shoved against the polished wooden banister of the grand staircase. "You don't know who you're dealing with!" Marcus shrieked, his face flushed red with humiliation and rage as spittle flew from his lips. "The board will bury you all! This house isn't yours, Julian! It never was!"
Clara fell to her knees on the plush red carpet, the sparkling fabric of her strapless gown pooling around her like shattered glass. Her long brown hair fell forward in disarray, hiding her tear-streaked face as she stared up at Julian with a mixture of utter disbelief and raw desperation. She reached out a trembling, manicured hand, her diamond necklace catching the dim light as she grabbed the hem of Julian's dark green trousers.
"Julian... please," Clara sobbed, her voice cracking with theatrical yet genuine panic. "Look at me. We've been together for years. We built this life. Think of our family... don't let them take me away. Tell them it was a misunderstanding, a corporate dispute that got out of hand!"
Julian didn’t look down at her. He held three-year-old Lily securely against his chest, her small white cardigan pressed softly against the dark fabric of his black shirt. His stern facial expression remained completely unreadable, carved from stone and absolute resolve. He gently adjusted his grip, ensuring Lily’s face remained hidden from the chaotic spectacle unfolding on the grand staircase.
"You didn't think of family when you packed her room and threw her belongings into the hallway," Julian said, his voice chillingly low, cutting through Clara’s desperate sobs. "You didn't think of family when you watched her tumble off her chair and told her she had no place at the master table. You chose a corporate shell, Clara. Now you get to share its collapse."
Agent Vance stepped forward, gesturing to a female officer who immediately moved to assist Clara off the floor. "Clara Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny," the officer recited coldly, pulling Clara’s arms behind her back as another pair of silver cuffs locked into place.
Clara let out a piercing, high-pitched scream of denial as she was hauled toward the open front double doors, her diamond necklace slipping from her throat and clattering uselessly against the red-carpeted floor. The heavy brass luggage bags that Marcus and Clara had packed earlier that day now stood as silent, pathetic monuments to their failed coup, surrounded by federal marshals and blinking tactical lights.
Marcus was dragged out first, his head bowed in miserable defeat, muttering curses under his breath. Clara followed, sobbing hysterically as the cold night air hit her bare shoulders. As the heavy mahogany doors swung shut, sealing them outside, a sudden heavy silence settled back over the grand dining room. Julian set Lily down gently on her feet, crouching to look her in the eye.
"Are the bad people gone, Daddy?" Lily whispered, her big eyes blinking up at him through her short bangs.

"They're gone, sweetheart," Julian said softly, kissing her forehead. But as he stood up, his phone vibrated in his pocket with a text from an unknown number containing a single, chilling photo.
