Chapter 13 - The Broken Gantry

The heavy silence that followed Kael’s violent fall was broken only by the muffled, frantic pounding of three-year-old Lily against the steel walls of the auxiliary kiln. Victor stumbled backward, his heels catching on a coil of rusted wire left near the gantry railing. His face, once arrogant and untouchable, turned pale as chalk as Julian advanced toward him with the slow, inevitable momentum of an avalanche.

"Julian... wait," Victor stammered, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture, his fingers trembling violently. "We're family! We share the same blood! Everything I did, I did to protect the legacy of the Vance name from falling into ruin!"

Julian stopped two paces away from his uncle. The dark chest tattoos visible at the collar of his black shirt heaved with his slow, controlled breathing. His stern facial expression was carved from absolute ice, his eyes locked onto Victor with a chilling, predatory focus.

"You didn't protect the legacy, Victor," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal weight that made Victor’s knees buckle. "You poisoned the bricks with greed, and you traded family for control. The legacy dies tonight."

Before Victor could speak another word, Julian grabbed him by the lapels of his dark wool coat, lifting the older man effortlessly off his feet and slamming him hard against the rusted metal railing of the gantry. The metal groaned under the impact, bolts snapping free from the concrete floor with sharp, metallic cracks as the entire section of the walkway began to tilt dangerously over the open drop below.

"The ledger, Victor," Julian demanded, his face inches from his uncle's. "Where is the original master key to the estate's physical vault? Where are the deeds?"

Victor choked for air, his hands clawing weakly at Julian’s wrists. He laughed weakly, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "You... you think the vault is the end? The vault is rigged with a thermal charge, Julian. If I don't enter the override code by midnight... the entire house, the nursery, everything goes up in smoke."

Julian’s eyes narrowed further. He didn't hesitate. With a sudden, explosive heave, he threw Victor flat onto the tilting gantry floor, ignoring the snapping bolts and the screeching metal. He turned his back on his uncle, sprinting toward the heavy iron door of the auxiliary kiln where Lily was still crying out.

He threw the heavy steel latch, swinging the door wide open. Lily tumbled out instantly into the open air, her white tulle dress smudged with soot, her little white cardigan torn at the sleeve. Julian dropped to his knees, scooping her up into his arms and pulling her tightly against his broad chest.

"I've got you, sweetheart," Julian murmured, his voice softening instantly as he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "We're going home now."
