Chapter 1 - The Broken Chair and the Stolen Room

The heavy mahogany dining chair slid back against the parquet floor with a sharp groan, echoing through the cavernous white-columned dining room of the estate. Clara stood in her glittering strapless gown, her long brown hair cascading over bare shoulders that shimmered under the crystal chandelier. She didn’t look down as her sudden movement sent three-year-old Lily tumbling off the cushioned seat and onto the plush red carpeted floor below. The toddler let out a startled, breathless gasp, her white tulle dress catching slightly on the carved wooden leg before she righted herself, rubbing her small elbow with wide, tear-rimmed eyes.
"Watch where you sit, Lily," Clara murmured coldly, her diamond necklace catching the light as she adjusted the strap of her gown with detached precision. "Your father and I have matters to discuss that don’t involve you playing dress-up at the adults' table."
Lily scrambled up, her little white cardigan flying open as she bolted toward the arched entryway leading to the grand hallway. The heavy brass luggage bags sat stacked near the front double doors, gleaming with expensive leather labels. A tall figure in a dark green suit stepped into the threshold, his broad shoulders filling the space, his stern expression softening only slightly as his daughter barreled toward him. Beneath the collar of his black shirt, the edge of an intricate dark chest tattoo peeked out, a stark contrast to the sterile opulence of the mansion.
"Daddy, she packed my room too!" Lily cried out, grabbing the hem of his dark green trousers and pointing frantically toward the heavy leather trunks by the door.
Julian looked down at his daughter, his jaw tightening into a hard line. He knelt, placing a warm, heavy hand on her shoulder, his chest rising with a slow, controlled breath. Before he could speak, Julian's trusted estate manager, Marcus, stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway, smoothing the lapels of his dark blue suit with an infuriatingly calm demeanor.
"Don't make a scene, Julian," Marcus said, his voice dripping with an unwarranted sense of ownership. "The child has no place in the master wing anymore. She can sleep in the storage room."
Julian straightened slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Marcus with a chilling, predatory stillness that made the air in the hallway drop ten degrees. "Repeat that," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low.
Marcus didn’t blink. "You heard me. The storage room is quite sufficient for her."
Before Marcus could finish his arrogant smirk, Julian’s fist struck his jaw with brutal, shattering force. Marcus flew backward, crashing hard against the marble statue pedestal and knocking a heavy red velvet rope stanchion to the floor with a metallic clang. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in utter horror as the heavy brass base rolled across the floor. Julian stepped over the fallen stanchion, his gaze blazing with fury as he stared down at the groaning man.
"You took her chair and packed her room," Julian said, his voice trembling with restrained rage. "Now pack yours."

Marcus wiped blood from his lip, laughing bitterly as he stood up. "You think you still own this house, Julian? Check your bank accounts."
