Chapter 4 - The Federal Threshold

The cold evening wind swept into the grand hallway, rustling the floral garlands wrapped around the pristine white columns and carrying the sharp scent of oncoming rain. The line of federal marshals stood shoulder to shoulder in the open doorway, their dark tactical gear contrasting sharply with the opulent, sterile white-and-gold decor of the estate. At the front of the formation stood Agent Vance, a weathered man with sharp gray eyes and a heavy leather holster strapped across his chest. He didn't wait for an invitation; he stepped across the threshold, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the floor.
"Julian Vance?" the lead agent called out, his voice cutting through the tense air of the grand dining hall. "We have an active federal warrant for financial conspiracy, asset stripping, and corporate extortion."
Clara let out a sharp, breathless gasp, her hand flying back to cover her mouth as she stumbled backward against the mahogany dining table. The sparkling fabric of her strapless gown caught on the carved edge, nearly tripping her before she caught her balance on the polished wood. Her eyes widened in absolute terror as she stared at the badges gleaming under the crystal chandelier. "There’s been a mistake! We didn't do anything! He did it! Marcus is the executor!"
Marcus snapped out of his frozen shock, his face twisting into a mask of frantic betrayal as he turned on Clara. "Shut up, you fool!" he snarled, abandoning all pretense of his calm corporate demeanor. He pointed a shaking finger at Clara. "It was her idea! She provided the access codes to the private servers! She signed the preliminary power-of-attorney documents while Julian was incapacitated!"
Julian remained entirely calm, standing like a statue amidst the rising chaos. He gently reached down and scooped three-year-old Lily into his arms, resting her small white tulle-clad body against his broad chest. Lily buried her face in the dark fabric of his black shirt, her little fingers wrapping tightly around the lapel of his dark green suit. Julian shielded her eyes from the flashing tactical lights outside, his stern expression unwavering as he looked directly at Agent Vance.
"Agent Vance," Julian said, his voice steady and resonant in the cavernous room. "I believe you'll find all the digital evidence, transferred offshore accounts, and signed conspiracy documents synchronized directly to your secure servers as of three minutes ago. The automated asset recovery protocol has completed its cycle."
Agent Vance nodded slowly, pulling a crisp set of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. He signaled two of his officers to move past him toward Marcus and Clara. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. We received the data burst right as we cleared the front gates. The digital paper trail is airtight. Every cent they tried to siphon has been frozen and traced right back to their offshore shell entities."
Marcus backed away, his dark blue suit jacket flapping open as he hit the edge of the grand staircase. "No! You can't touch me! I have diplomatic immunity through the board—!"

Before Marcus could finish his desperate plea, an officer grabbed his arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency as the cold click of steel echoed through the hall.
