Chapter 8 - The Scream in the Nursery

The sound of Lily’s piercing scream shattered the tense silence of the study like a falling mirror. Julian didn’t hesitate; the heavy mahogany desk shook as he shoved it aside with brute force, sending the blood-stained ledger sliding toward Victor. Without casting a single backward glance at his resurrected uncle, Julian sprinted out of the study and threw himself down the sweeping wooden stairs, taking three steps at a time with terrifying athletic speed.

"Lily!" Julian roared, his voice echoing through the vaulted white-columned halls of the mansion like thunder.

He hit the red-carpeted floor of the ground hallway and bolted toward the arched entryway leading to the family wing. The air felt heavier here, saturated with the faint, metallic scent of ozone and something sharp and chemical. The heavy brass luggage bags that Marcus had packed earlier still sat by the front double doors, but the front door itself was standing wide open, letting the cold night wind whip the floral garlands against the white pillars.

Julian burst into Lily’s nursery. The room was pristine, decorated in soft pastels with white lace curtains billowing in the gale from the open window. But Lily was gone.

In her place, sitting neatly in the center of the white-tufted rug, was a small, familiar wooden doll with a porcelain face—and pinned directly to its chest with a silver letter opener was a crisp, folded piece of heavy cardstock.

Julian’s chest heaved with heavy, controlled breaths as he crossed the room in two strides. He ripped the letter opener free, his dark eyes scanning the handwritten note scrawled in hurried, frantic strokes.

“If you want to see your daughter again before the foundation burns to the ground, bring the original deed and the blood ledger to the old brickworks by midnight. Come alone, or she becomes another entry in the ledger.”

The signature at the bottom was a crude drawing of a burning brick—the exact symbol of the underground syndicate Victor had used decades ago to smuggle contraband and seize properties through forced foreclosures.

Julian crumpled the card in his massive fist, his knuckles turning white. The dark chest tattoos visible at the open collar of his black shirt seemed to burn against his skin as his rage reached a boiling point. They hadn't just targeted his money or his home; they had taken his flesh and blood to force his hand into a final, inescapable confrontation.

He spun around on his heel, his mind calculating every exit, every hidden weapon cache, and every possible route to the old brickworks on the outskirts of the city. He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a single emergency bypass code that would trigger a localized lockdown of the entire estate's perimeter defenses.

"Lockdown protocol Omega," Julian commanded into the receiver, his voice absolute and freezing cold. "Arm the perimeter sensors. Send the drone feed of the north road to my visor."

As the automated female voice confirmed the system activation, a soft rustling sound came from the heavy velvet curtains draped over the nursery window. Julian whipped his head around, his hand instinctively dropping toward his waist where a concealed tactical blade rested in its sheath.

"Show yourself," Julian barked, taking a slow, predatory step toward the billowing white lace.
