Chapter 12 - The Iron Kiln

The amber glow from the dangling work light flickered erratically, casting long, dancing shadows across the crumbling brick walls of the abandoned factory floor. Kael stood motionless on the upper gantry, his thick arms wrapped securely around three-year-old Lily. The toddler was sobbing softly now, her small white cardigan rumpled, her face pressed against Kael’s dark tactical vest as she called out once more for her father.
Julian stood in the center of the dust-covered floor, his muscles coiled like springs beneath his tactical vest. His dark eyes remained locked onto Victor, who peered down from the gantry with a twisted, triumphant smirk playing on his lips.
"You always thought you were the smartest man in the room, Julian," Victor called out, his raspy voice echoing off the vaulted brick ceiling. "You thought you could outsmart the board, outsmart Clara, and outsmart me. But you forgot the cardinal rule of the Vance family: nothing is ever truly yours unless you bleed for it."
"Drop the child, Victor," Julian repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a chilling, lethal stillness that made Kael instinctively tighten his grip on Lily. "Step away from the gantry, and maybe you walk out of here breathing. Push this one step further, and there won't be enough left of you to bury."
Victor let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed through the empty factory like grinding stones. He turned his head toward Kael and gave a sharp, imperceptible nod.
Without warning, Kael hoisted Lily up and shoved her backward through the open, reinforced iron door of the cold auxiliary kiln set into the brick wall behind the gantry, slamming the heavy latch shut with a deafening metallic ring. Lily’s muffled screams for help battered against the thick steel walls from inside the dark chamber.
Julian’s control snapped. The restraint he had maintained through every betrayal, every stolen asset, and every physical blow vanished in a single, blinding surge of pure, primal fury.
He didn't yell; he moved. With explosive acceleration, Julian sprinted toward the rusted metal staircase leading up to the gantry, taking the steps three at a time. Kael unclipped a heavy steel combat knife from his belt and stepped forward to block the landing, his crescent-shaped burn scar stretching across his neck as he bared his teeth in a savage grin.
"End of the line, Vance," Kael growled, lunging forward with a downward slash aimed straight at Julian’s shoulder.
Julian didn't dodge. He intercepted Kael’s wrist mid-air with lightning speed, twisting the joint with a sickening crunch that echoed over Lily's cries. Before Kael could scream, Julian drove his knee upward into the enforcer's chest, lifting the massive man off his feet and sending him crashing backward over the railing of the gantry.
Kael plummeted twenty feet down onto the concrete floor below, hitting the ground with a sickening thud and remaining entirely motionless.

Victor’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of cold, unadulterated terror as Julian turned his smoldering gaze away from the edge and stepped slowly toward his uncle.
