Chapter 2 - The Empty Vault and the Shared Secret

Marcus stood up slowly, wiping the metallic smear of fresh blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of a manicured hand. His dark blue suit was slightly rumpled from the impact against the marble pedestal, but his posture remained rigid, projecting a strange, unsettling confidence. Clara hurried over, her sparkly strapless gown rustling against the red carpeted floor as she placed a delicate hand on Marcus’s arm. Her long brown hair swung forward, partially obscuring her tense facial expression, though her eyes darted nervously between the bleeding manager and Julian.
"Julian, stop this madness right now," Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with a sharp edge of panic. "Marcus is only trying to streamline the estate's management. We have financial audits coming, and your archaic attachments to this child and her nursery are dragging us all down."
Julian didn't look at Clara. His gaze remained locked onto Marcus, burning with a cold, intense fury. The dark chest tattoos visible beneath his open-collared black shirt tightened as he flexed his hands, his knuckles still bearing the faint red marks of the strike. The heavy brass luggage bags near the front double doors seemed to mock them all, silent witnesses to an eviction that had happened without Julian's consent or knowledge.
"Streamline?" Julian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet, carrying an eerie stillness that commanded the room. "You packed a toddler's room and declared her banished to a storage facility in my own home while I was away for forty-eight hours. Clara, you stood right there and watched her fall from her chair without blinking. And you, Marcus... you speak in my house as if the deed bears your name."
Marcus smiled, a sickeningly polite curve of his lips that reached nowhere near his cold eyes. He reached into the inner pocket of his dark blue suit and pulled out a slim, cream-colored tablet. With a flick of his thumb, the screen illuminated, casting a pale blue glow across his bruised jawline. He turned the device toward Julian, holding it out like a shield.
"The deed doesn't bear my name, Julian," Marcus said softly, his tone dripping with quiet venom. "It bears yours. Or rather, it did. But due to a series of high-risk corporate investments approved under your digital signature while you were recovering from your concussion last month, the holding company absorbed every single asset. The mansion, the accounts, the trusts—they belong to the board now. And the board has appointed me as executor."
Clara exhaled a sharp breath of relief, her posture relaxing slightly as she clutched her diamond necklace. She stepped closer to Marcus, her previous hesitation melting away into arrogance. "You see, Julian? We tried to tell you gently. You aren't the master here anymore. You're just a guest who overstayed his welcome."
Julian stared at the tablet screen. The numbers scrolled past in a blur of crimson deficits—zeros where millions once stood. Every account was drained. Every trust fund was locked behind corporate red tape. Yet, instead of breaking down or shouting, Julian’s lips parted into a slow, terrifying smile. He took a measured step forward, making Marcus instinctively flinch backward against the floral garland-wrapped white column.
"You think a digital signature and a corporate shell game can erase what is buried beneath these floors?" Julian whispered, leaning in close so only Marcus could hear. "You took the house, Marcus. But you forgot to check who built the foundation."

Before Marcus could process the warning, his phone in his pocket began to vibrate furiously with an emergency priority alert.
