Chapter 7 - The Broadcast

The television anchor's voice droned on in the background of the precinct lobby, but the words echoed in Mark's ears like a death knell. 'Sterling Holdings continues its legacy of innovation and community leadership under the sole direction of Ms. Clara Sterling.'
Mark gripped the heavy plastic telephone receiver so hard his knuckles turned white. He looked through the reinforced glass at Victor Vance, who calmly checked his expensive wristwatch as if he were waiting for a commuter train rather than presiding over the destruction of an innocent man's life.
"You coordinated the whole thing," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and pure, unadulterated fury. "The embezzlement, the police raid, the media statement—you wrote the script before Clara even shoved Elena to the floor."
Victor didn't blink. He lowered his receiver slightly, speaking with the cold detachment of a man who viewed human lives as mere ledger entries. "Business requires stability, Mark. Your ambitious expansion plans were draining the liquid capital reserves. Clara understands the board's vision. You were simply a liability that needed to be pruned."
"Elena is carrying my child!" Mark roared, ignoring the two guards who instantly stepped forward and grabbed his shoulders from behind. "She is your client's sister! Have you both completely lost your humanity?"
"Humanity doesn't pay dividends," Victor replied smoothly. He pushed the resignation agreement a fraction of an inch closer to the glass slot. "You have sixty seconds to decide, Mark. The holding cell door opens at dawn, or it stays locked for the next ten years. Sign the paper."
Mark looked down at the document. His signature line sat there waiting, an open door to freedom, but walking through it meant abandoning Elena to a monster who wore a maroon sweater and a designer smile. He couldn't do it. He couldn't let Clara win without a fight, no matter the personal cost.
With a sudden, violent yank, Mark jerked his arm free from the guards' grip and grabbed the heavy plastic telephone, slamming it down onto its cradle with a sharp crash that echoed through the glass partition.
"Tell Clara she can keep her dirty money," Mark shouted through the intercom speaker, his voice reverberating off the concrete walls. "Tell her I'll see her in a real courtroom, and I won't stop until every lie she's told is dragged into the light!"
Victor Vance sighed softly, shaking his head with mild disappointment. He picked up his own receiver, placed it neatly on the cradle, and stood up, adjusting his charcoal vest without a single word of farewell.

As Victor turned his back and walked toward the exit, a young female public defender slipped past him, holding a yellow legal pad and whispering a phrase that made Mark's heart stop entirely: "Don't sign the papers, Mr. Reynolds. Your wife just woke up from surgery, and she managed to smuggle out a hidden message."
