Chapter 10 - The Conditional Release

The heavy iron door of the holding cell swung open with a long, metallic squeak. Mark stared down at the set of keys resting on the stained concrete floor, suspicious of the sudden change in fortune. Nothing in Clara's world happened by accident; freedom came with strings attached, and Victor Vance's smile was far too knowing to be innocent.

"Why are the charges being suspended?" Mark asked cautiously, keeping his hands at his sides as he stepped out of the cell. "Clara was just on every news network portraying me as a violent criminal."

Victor adjusted his charcoal vest, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Public relations, Mark. Clara's PR team realized that keeping you locked up in a high-profile case creates unnecessary legal scrutiny from federal regulators. It's much cleaner to let you walk out, watch you stumble, and let you dig your own grave while attempting to reclaim a company you no longer control."

Sarah Lin stepped forward, stepping between Mark and the corporate lawyer. "Mr. Reynolds is released under my direct legal counsel. Any attempt to harass, intimidate, or re-arrest him without new physical evidence will be met immediately with a federal civil rights lawsuit."

Victor chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Do as you like, Ms. Lin. But remember, the estate on Hawthorne Lane is private property, protected by private security. If Mr. Reynolds sets foot on those grounds without a properly executed federal warrant, he will be treated as a common trespasser—and this time, the guards won't wait for the police."

With that chilling warning, Victor turned on his heel and walked away, his polished shoes clicking rhythmically against the station floor.

Mark looked at Sarah, his jaw set with quiet determination. "He's baiting us. He thinks we'll rush to the estate recklessly and walk right into another trap."

"He's right," Sarah admitted, pulling a tablet from her leather briefcase. "The federal magistrate hasn't signed the search warrant yet because the corporate ledger is classified under private family trust law, which requires a much higher burden of proof. If we go in without that warrant, we lose everything."

"Then we wait for the warrant," Mark said firmly, though every instinct in his body screamed that Elena didn't have time to wait. Every hour she remained under hospital security controlled by Clara's hired staff was another hour of mortal danger.

"We don't have to wait for the warrant to secure the perimeter," a soft voice interrupted from the doorway of the precinct lobby.

Mark and Sarah spun around to see a young woman in nurse's scrubs standing nervously by the water cooler. It was the same nurse who had smuggled Elena's note out of St. Jude's Memorial.

"My name is Chloe," the nurse whispered, looking around anxiously to ensure no officers were listening. "Elena managed to text me the override code to the estate's secondary maintenance gate before Clara's security detail confiscated her phone. If you move fast, you can get into the basement safe before the morning shift change."
