Chapter 13 - Locked Inside

The heavy deadbolt slid home with a definitive, metallic echo that reverberated through the damp basement walls. Mark spun around and sprinted down the hallway, throwing his entire weight against the oak service door. It didn't even budge; the reinforced steel frame held firm against his assault.

"She locked us in," Mark said, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps as he pounded his fists once against the wood in sheer frustration.

Sarah Lin hurried over, pulling her smartphone from her pocket and swiping frantically across the screen. "There's no cellular signal down here. The concrete foundation and reinforced steel doors act as a complete Faraday cage. We're completely cut off from the outside world."

"That was her plan all along," Mark realized, leaning his forehead against the cool wooden door as the reality of the trap set in. "She didn't just want us to find an empty safe; she wanted us trapped inside the estate so she could report a B&E and have us arrested for felony trespassing."

"We need to find another exit," Sarah said, shining the small LED flashlight on her phone along the length of the basement corridor. "Every commercial building of this era has a secondary utility or coal chute leading to the exterior."

Mark nodded, shaking off the momentary despair. He led Sarah back toward the archive room, their footsteps echoing sharply in the enclosed space. They checked every utility closet, every storage bay, and every ventilation shaft, but each exit was either welded shut or controlled by digital biometric locks that required Clara's master override code.

As they reached the far corner of the basement near the old boiler room, Sarah stopped abruptly, pointing her phone light toward a small, rusted metal box mounted on the wall. It was the estate's main analog breaker panel—completely disconnected from the digital smart-home network Clara relied upon.

"Look at this," Sarah whispered, crouching down to inspect the wiring. "This bypasses the digital monitoring system entirely. If we trip the manual breaker, it will cut power to the entire estate, disabling the smart locks and forcing all exterior security doors into default manual mode."

Mark knelt beside her, his eyes scanning the heavy lever labeled Main Utility Override. "If we cut the power, the security cameras go dark, the smart gates pop open, and any automated alerts to Clara's phone are instantly severed."

"It will also trip an alarm at the local county sheriff's department indicating a total power failure at the estate," Sarah added, her fingers tracing the heavy iron handle. "They'll dispatch a patrol unit to investigate within ten minutes."

Mark looked at the lever. It was their only remaining play.

"Do it," Mark said firmly.

Sarah gripped the heavy iron handle with both hands and pulled down with all her might. With a loud, sparking snap, the entire basement plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
