Chapter 11 - The Maintenance Gate

The pre-dawn air was biting cold, smelling faintly of pine and impending rain as Mark's old sedan crept down the unlit access road behind the Hawthorne Lane estate. The sprawling property loomed ahead like a dark fortress, its manicured hedges casting long, menacing shadows across the gravel drive. In the passenger seat, Sarah Lin checked the digital tablet displaying the estate's floor plan and the digital sequence Chloe had smuggled out of the hospital.
"This is completely insane," Sarah muttered under her breath, tapping the screen to verify the code. "If Clara's private security detail is still patrolling the perimeter, we'll be caught before we even reach the basement access door."
"We don't have a choice," Mark replied quietly, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were stark white. His mind flashed back to Elena lying pale and helpless on the living room floor, her brown ponytail tangled in the carpet, her green knit top stained with fear and betrayal. He couldn't let Clara win. He had to secure that ledger.
The sedan rolled to a silent halt beside the rusted iron maintenance gate half-hidden by thick ivy. Mark leaned across the center console and punched the six-digit override code into the weathered digital keypad mounted on the brick pillar.
For a terrifying two seconds, nothing happened. The tiny red LED light on the keypad continued to blink stubbornly.
"Did the nurse give you the right sequence?" Sarah asked, her hand hovering over the door handle, ready to bail out if an alarm triggered.
"She said it was the master override," Mark whispered, his finger pressing the final digit.
With a heavy, pneumatic click, the internal lock disengaged, and the iron gate slowly swung inward, revealing a narrow paved path leading directly down to the basement service entrance of the main house.
Mark killed the headlights immediately, coasting the car through the gap before pulling it behind a thick cluster of rhododendron bushes. They stepped out into the freezing darkness, their breath pluming into white clouds in the heavy air.
"Stay close to the wall," Mark instructed, leading the way down the sloping concrete ramp toward the heavy oak service door.
The basement door was unlocked—a careless oversight by the night shift security detail, or perhaps a deliberate trap left open by Victor Vance. Mark pushed the heavy door inward, stepping into the cool, damp darkness of the basement corridor. The air smelled of aged paper, old cedar, and faint industrial cleaning products.
"The safe is behind the mahogany wine rack in the old study archive," Mark whispered, navigating the familiar hallways from memory.

They reached the heavy wooden door of the archive room, but as Mark reached out to turn the brass handle, the overhead fluorescent lights suddenly buzzed to life with blinding intensity, flooding the hallway with harsh white light.
