Chapter 14 - The Final Circuit

The sudden darkness was absolute. The only illumination came from the faint, flickering glow of Sarah's smartphone flashlight cutting a narrow beam across the concrete floor. From somewhere deep within the walls of the sprawling estate, the low, steady hum of the automated smart-home system died away instantly, replaced by an eerie, heavy silence.

"It worked," Sarah whispered, her voice tense as she stood up in the dark. "The digital locks should be disengaging right now."

A second later, a loud, pneumatic click echoed from the heavy service door at the end of the hallway, followed by the sound of the deadbolt springing back under spring tension. The trap had been broken from the inside out.

"Let's move," Mark said, grabbing Sarah by the arm and guiding her swiftly toward the service exit before Clara's private security detail could realize what had happened.

They pushed the heavy oak door open, and the crisp, pre-dawn air rushed in to greet them. The exterior grounds of the estate were completely dark—every security floodlight, decorative path lamp, and perimeter camera had been successfully disabled by the manual override.

As they sprinted across the dark lawn toward the rhododendron bushes where Mark's sedan was parked, the distant wail of a police siren began to echo through the quiet suburban neighborhood. County sheriff cruisers were responding to the total power failure alarm at the Sterling estate.

"Get in," Mark urged, sliding behind the steering wheel and starting the engine with a quiet purr. He flicked the headlights on only after they had cleared the rusted maintenance gate, blending seamlessly into the early morning commuter traffic turning onto Hawthorne Lane.

Less than five miles away, St. Jude's Memorial Hospital sat quietly under the pale light of dawn. Mark didn't head toward his apartment or a safe house; he drove straight to the hospital, driven by the burning need to see Elena and ensure she and their newborn child were safe from Clara's ruthless reach.

When they pulled up to the emergency entrance of the hospital, two county sheriff cruisers were already parked out front, their blue and red lights reflecting off the glass doors of the lobby.

Mark parked the car in a restricted zone and leaped out, Sarah Lin right behind him. As they pushed through the sliding glass doors, they saw Clara Sterling standing in the middle of the lobby, speaking urgently to Officer Vance and a hospital administrator, looking remarkably unbothered by the power outage at her estate.

"There he is," Clara shouted, pointing directly at Mark with a dramatic, rehearsed gesture of terror. "That's the man who broke into my home!"
