Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Evidence

"I am not crazy!" Mark shouted, stepping backward until the edge of the sofa pressed against the back of his knees. The flashing lights from the ambulance outside cast long, distorted shadows across the living room walls. He looked at the empty spot on the coffee table where the miniature camera had rested only moments before. It was physically impossible for anyone to have moved it without him noticing, yet the polished wood was completely bare.
Officer Vance took another slow, deliberate step forward, his hand resting securely on his handcuffs. "Mr. Reynolds, resisting officers or obstructing an investigation will only make things worse for you. I suggest you comply quietly while we secure the premises."
"You don't understand," Mark pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation as he kept his eyes locked on the front door, desperately hoping the paramedics would delay long enough to back up his story. "Check my phone! I was on the line with nine-one-one. The dispatcher has a recording of her admitting to the assault!"
Clara let out a delicate, mocking sigh, leaning against the doorframe with her arms folded once again over her maroon turtleneck. "Oh, Mark. Stop digging a deeper hole for yourself. Everyone knows your business has been failing for months. You're under immense financial pressure. It's tragic, really, how stress makes people lash out at their own families."
The second officer, a younger woman with sharp features, stepped away from the entryway and held up Mark's discarded tablet. The screen lit up, displaying an open banking application showing a large, unauthorized wire transfer made earlier that morning from the corporate account straight to a personal offshore holding.
"Captain, take a look at this," the young officer said, her voice laced with censure. "Ten minutes before the emergency call, fifty thousand dollars was transferred out of Sterling Holdings into an overseas account registered under Mark's name."
Mark's blood ran cold. He stared at the tablet in horror. "That wasn't me! I didn't touch the accounts today! Clara has the master admin keys—she set up the entire corporate structure!"
Officer Vance didn't wait for further explanations. He grabbed Mark's right arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency as the cold steel of the handcuffs snapped around his wrists. The metal bit sharply into his skin, a brutal reality check that the trap had snapped shut completely.
"You have the right to remain silent," Officer Vance recited mechanically, pushing Mark toward the open door.

As they walked past Clara, she leaned in close, her breath warm against his ear. "Enjoy the night in a holding cell, brother-in-law. By morning, Elena will have signed the divorce papers, and everything our father built will be mine."
