Chapter 2 - The Hidden Lens

Mark froze, his thumb hovering over the smartphone screen as the 911 dispatcher repeated the emergency address. The red recording light on the miniature camera tucked beneath the decorative wooden bowl flickered silently in the dimming afternoon light. A cold sweat broke out across the back of his neck. Clara hadn't just attacked Elena on a whim; this was a calculated trap, staged and recorded for an audience he couldn't yet fathom.
"Sir? Are you still on the line? We need the exact location of the assault," the dispatcher's voice crackled through the phone, demanding an immediate response while sirens began to wail faintly in the distance.
"Yes, I'm here. Send them to four-eighteen Hawthorne Lane," Mark stammered, his eyes darting from the hidden camera back to Clara’s smug, unblinking face. He gently brushed a stray lock of brown hair away from Elena's pale forehead. Elena groaned softly, her hand weakly gripping Mark's grey polo shirt. Her brown boots remained awkwardly twisted, a visual reminder of the violent shove that had sent her crashing down.
Clara uncrossed her arms and took a slow, deliberate step forward, her black heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She didn't look like a guilty perpetrator; she moved with the terrifying ease of someone who held all the cards.
"Save your breath, Mark," Clara said smoothly, her voice lacking any trace of remorse. "The paramedics will take her away, but the narrative has already been written. You think you're the hero of this story, but you're just a footnote in a much bigger plan."
Mark felt a hot surge of rage burning in his chest, but he forced himself to stay calm for Elena's sake. He kept the phone pressed firmly to his ear, ensuring the dispatcher could hear every chilling word coming out of Clara's mouth. This recording might be their only defense if Clara had rigged the security feeds in the house.
"You're sick, Clara," Mark growled under his breath, leaning over Elena to shield her from her sister's toxic presence. "She is your own flesh and blood. How could you do this?"
"Flesh and blood doesn't mean a damn thing when millions of dollars are on the line," Clara retorted, her lips curling into a predatory smile. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her own phone, tapping the screen once before sliding it back into her black jeans.
Outside, the wailing sirens grew deafeningly loud, the flashing red and blue lights painting the living room walls in frantic streaks of color. The front doorbell rang once, sharp and demanding.

Mark stood up slowly, keeping his eyes locked on Clara. He reached for the front door handle, but as he pulled it open, he didn't see the expected paramedics, instead facing two uniformed police officers holding a warrant with his own signature forged at the bottom.
