Chapter 3 - The Forged Warrant

The cold evening air rushed into the warm living room, carrying the scent of rain and ozone. Officer Vance, a weathered cop with stern gray eyes, stepped across the threshold without waiting for an invitation. He glanced down at Elena, who was still curled on the carpet clutching her abdomen, and then fixed a suspicious glare directly on Mark.
"Mark Reynolds?" Officer Vance asked, his voice flat and authoritative as he held out the crisp white document. "We received an anonymous tip regarding a domestic disturbance and potential financial fraud originating from this residence. We also have a signed restraining order and eviction notice filed earlier this morning."
Mark stepped back in sheer disbelief, the smartphone still clutched tightly in his sweating palm. "There must be some mistake! My wife is pregnant, she was just assaulted by her sister, and I called nine-one-one for an ambulance!"
Behind Officer Vance, two paramedics finally rushed through the door with a stretcher, their heavy boots thudding against the floor. They immediately knelt beside Elena, pushing past Mark with practiced urgency.
"Ma'am, can you hear me? We're going to get you up," the lead paramedic said gently, carefully sliding the backboard beneath Elena's green knit top. Elena nodded weakly, tears finally escaping her closed eyelids as they hoisted her onto the stretcher. Her brown ponytail brushed against the stiff white sheets as they wheeled her toward the open door.
Mark moved to follow them, but Officer Vance raised a heavy hand, blocking his path. "Not so fast, Mr. Reynolds. You're not going anywhere until we sort out these documents. According to this court order, this property belongs exclusively to Clara Sterling, and you and your wife were legally evicted twenty-four hours ago."
Clara stepped forward, dabbing dry eyes with a tissue she had magically produced from her pocket. The transformation was sickening; her posture slumped into a picture of fragile victimization. "Thank God you're here, Officer. He's been unstable all day. He pushed Elena, and when I tried to stop him, he threatened me too."
Mark stared at Clara, his mouth opening in shock. The sheer audacity of her lie left him momentarily speechless. "You pushed her! I was sitting right there! There's a hidden camera recording this entire room—look at the table!"
Mark pointed frantically toward the wooden bowl, but as Officer Vance turned his flashlight toward the spot, the camera was gone. The table was completely bare.
Clara offered a sad, patronizing shake of her head. "See, Officer? Delusions. He's been seeing things for weeks."

Officer Vance gripped the cuffs on his belt, his eyes hardening as he looked back at Mark. "Step away from the table, sir, and put your hands behind your back."
