Chapter 7 - The Auction of Vanities

The grand ballroom of the metropolitan auction house was packed to capacity, buzzing with the nervous energy of society’s elite. They hadn't come to bid on fine art or rare jewels this time; they had come to witness the public liquidation of the fallen Sterling family empire. Rows of crystal chandeliers cast a harsh, brilliant light over the velvet-draped stages where crates of designer clothes, luxury watches, and exotic furs were being cataloged.
Sitting in the front row, wearing a tailored charcoal coat over her signature dark green dress, sat Elena Vance. She didn't look at the crowd whispering behind her. Her posture was immaculate, her gaze fixed entirely on the catalog in her lap.
Arthur and Chloe sat off to the side in the designated debtor’s seating area, forced to watch as their entire existence was sold off to the highest bidder. Chloe wore a simple, unbranded black coat—her first time wearing anything without a prominent designer label in her entire adult life. The sparkling pink mini dress had already been bagged and tagged as lot number 42.
"Lot number 42," the auctioneer’s booming voice echoed through the hall. "A designer sequined mini dress, worn once. Bidding starts at fifty dollars."
A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. A dress that had originally cost thousands was now being treated like cheap thrift-store merchandise. A few people chuckled quietly in the back rows.
Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, digging her fingernails into the palms of her hands until it hurt. The humiliation was absolute, burning away the last remnants of her arrogance.
Elena raised her hand lazily.
"We have a bid of five hundred dollars in the front row," the auctioneer announced, surprised. "Going once... going twice... sold to Mrs. Elena Vance."
Chloe snapped her eyes open, turning her head in disbelief to stare at Elena’s profile. Why would Elena buy her humiliating pink dress? What possible use could the brilliant, untouchable philanthropist have for the very symbol of Chloe’s shallow vanity?
Elena didn't turn around. She simply signaled an assistant, who walked over, picked up the sealed plastic bag containing the sparkling dress, and carried it out of the ballroom.
Arthur leaned over to his daughter, his voice a low, rasped whisper. "Don't look at them, Chloe. Keep your head down. We have to sign the final asset transfer papers by noon."

Chloe swallowed hard, feeling a strange mixture of shame and haunting curiosity. As she stood up to follow her father backstage, she noticed Julian standing near the exit, holding a phone to his ear, staring directly at her with a look that suggested the worst was yet to come.
